Is there a ever a right time for behavioral restraint and seclusion in the classroom or are those types of actions never appropriate and should be eliminated all together? California’s Governor, Gov. Brown recently signed legislation that limits the use of seclusion and behavioral restraints in school. In this episode, we chat about when and what is considered an appropriate response to a child’s behavior.

What We Discuss in This Episode:

  • Should behavioral restraint and seclusion be eliminated all together?
  • What’s considered a “clear and imminent” danger warranting appropriate seclusion and restraint?
  • How do we assess which circumstances are considered “reasonable” when it comes to using restraint and seclusion?
  • Why it’s important for teachers to observe children and notice any changes in behavior because that’s usually a good indication that there might be an issue on the horizon
  • What type of emergency intervention is allowed to be used?
  • Even if a child has a Behavior Intervention Program (BIP) in place, why might it still be important to request an assessment?
  • Always start with the needs of the child. That’s the most important place to begin
