Why are narcissists so controlling about everything? Narcissistic Abuse Recovery FAQ
Today I'm answering a question from Rachel, a SPAN member, about emotional abuse and controlling narcissists.
(SPAN is my free confidential online support group. SPAN stands for Support for People Affected by Narcissistic abuse - learn more and join at http://queenbeeing.com/span)
Rachel wants to know why narcissists are so controlling about everything - including what you wear, how you do your hair and groom yourself and even whether or not you can have pets and choose your own favorite color.
So let me ask you: have you been there? Have you ever felt just SHOCKED at the level of betrayal to which someone subjects you on a regular basis? Whether it's a partner, friend, a family member or even a co-worker, you might be dealing with a toxic narcissist, someone who lacks empathy (and may even have narcissistic personality disorder or another cluster b personality disorder).
Do you know and/or love a narcissist? If so, have you ever had one tell you that he or she "knows you better than you know yourself?" How about being told that your feelings and thoughts aren't real or legitimate? And depending on the point in your life in which you met the narc and the intensity of the manipulation, you might even believe what they tell you.
Why do narcissists feel the need to create such difficulties for the people in their lives? It has a lot to do with their need to be in control of every person, situation and thing they come into contact with - at least on some level.
For a narcissist, this is just par of the course - it's how they manage relationships and how they keep themselves artificially elevated within their own fragile egos- they start by messing with your head.
You become addicted to a narcissist's approval. As their source of narcissistic supply, you seek it out, changing yourself entirely if necessary to get that coveted "atta girl" or "good job, man" out of them.
Whether you'e still in a toxic relationship or you're going through a breakup or divorce, being a narcissistic supply is mentally and often physically exhausting - it's time to start the healing!
