Deerfield-based Baxter International says Hurricane Helene could cause a shortage of IV fluids that could last months. The company says its largest manufacturing plant in North Carolina was hard hit last month by the storm. It could take until the end of the year to bring some operations back to 100%. Baxter has been capping some orders for IV fluid. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized IV imports from other Baxter plants, from Canada, Ireland, China and the U.K. 

Also, the United Auto Workers union says a strike against at least one Stellantis plant could start within weeks as part of a controversy tied to Illinois. Listen for more below:

Cannect Wellness, a Chicago-based craft cannabis company, has raised $7 million in a second round of equity funding. The company has raised $14.5 million to date and plans to use the new cash infusion to increase production capacity and double its headcount, which currently stands at 26. The first funding round was used to build out its 22,000-square-foot facility in Franklin Park. Cannect Wellness has also expanded product offerings, including edibles, pre-rolls and concentrates. The company also plans to launch new brands and evaluate other expansion opportunities.

A new ranking names Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago as the best pediatric hospital in Illinois. UChicago Medicine’s Comer Children’s Hospital is ranked second. U.S. News & World Report also puts Lurie in the top ten nationally in two specialties, including neurosciences and neonatology. It’s the only Illinois hospital ranked for all 11 specialties included in the U.S. News report. U.S. News analyzed data from 108 children’s hospitals and surveyed thousands of pediatric specialists for its ranking. By the way, Lurie was also recently named the 9th best hospital globally in a ranking by Newsweek. 

Also, Chicago-based McDonald’s is suing several beef companies alleging those companies conspired to limit beef supplies and boost profits at the expense of McDonald’s. Listen for more below:
