This episode explores the social concept of the "gifted" child and the ways in which neurodivergence can present as giftedness, the social and class structures that influence giftedness, and ultimately the shame and emotion dysregulation that many adults who were raised as gifted children experience.
THE DEFINITION OF THE GIFTED CHILD:
A gifted child is a young person who demonstrates significantly advanced intellectual ability or exceptional talent compared to peers of the same age. This may include early mastery of language, complex problem-solving skills, strong memory, intense curiosity, or advanced creativity. Giftedness is not simply “being smart”; it reflects differences in how a child thinks, processes information, and experiences the world. Many gifted children show asynchronous development, meaning their intellectual abilities may be far ahead of their emotional or social development. While giftedness can be a strength, these children may also face unique challenges such as perfectionism, heightened sensitivity, social isolation, or pressure tied to achievement. Understanding giftedness involves recognizing both the child’s advanced abilities and their need for emotional support and developmentally appropriate care.
