October 15, 2024Falconry Chronicles Episode 137: Jenni Buckley
The first time I had a chance to record with friend and guest for this episode, Jenni Buckley, was at the 2019 NAFA meet. Four years later, we caught up again at the 2023 NAFA meet and talked more about our dachshunds, Harris's hawks, environmental concerns, and other things. Jenni is also putting together the 2024 NAFA meet, and we plan to record another NAFA Hawk Talk episode soon to let people know more about the details for the upcoming meet. It's always fun getting a chance to catch up with Jenni, and can't wait to see her and other friends at the upcoming meet!

October 14, 2024Bobcat Hunting with PBR Bullfighter Shorty Gorham
Release Date: 10-27-19
In this episode of Houndsman XP, Chris and Steve stretch the “Xtreme” credo to the max with a visit to the South Texas ranch country to hunt bobcats with Professional Bull Riders (PBR) celebrity, bullfighter Shorty Gorham. Shorty is not only known the world over for his professional bullfighting and his popular bullfighting circuit and company American Freestyle Bullfighting, but also for his crack pack of running Walker cat hounds. Chris and Steve see firsthand how Shorty’s hounds approach their big cat-catching work with every bit the energy and gusto that their master exhibits in the bull ring.
Gorham, growing up on a southern California ranch was in his words, “a cowboy in a surfer school.” Being a guy that has always met danger head on, Shorty has been a natural at fighting 1,700-pound tornados in bull flesh, major event after thrilling major bull riding event. Learning that Shorty was also an accomplished houndsman, Chris and Steve, with an introduction by Carnivore TV producer and former Houndsman XP guest Gary Roberson, seized the opportunity to go to Texas to hunt with and to interview Shorty Gorham, a major win for the Houndsman XP audience.
In this episode, recorded mid-hunt on a south Texas afternoon, the boys are joined by Gorham and Roberson in what is an interesting and very entertaining look at the exciting and very dangerous world of bull riding. They also dig deep into the background and abilities of the pack of running-stock hounds Gorham uses to consistently catch bobcats and mountain lions for his enjoyment and for that of the clients that book guided hunts with him. Airing on the week of the PBR World Finals are held in Las Vegas, listeners will be able to closely identify with the TV coverage of the epic event. This is an episode for the listener that likes his hound-hunting on the razor edge of excitement and that’s no bull.

October 11, 2024World Champion, Hall of Fame and Bobcat Hunter; Asa Briggs
Release date: 08-29-22
To describe Asa Briggs, it would have to be unassuming. His accomplishments do not reflect in his character. He is a quiet guy that doesn’t draw a lot of attention to himself when he is at an event until he turns a hound loose. People, when asked, describe as “always packing a nice dog” or “if he shows up at an event he has a real chance of winning”.
Houndsman XP host, Chris Powell traveled to north central Michigan and had a chat with Asa about hounds, competition coonhunting, bobcat hunting and hall of fame dogs. Asa shared a bit about his breeding philosophies and preparation for big events.
Listeners will get a real treat to hear from this Xtreme Performance Houndsman.

October 09, 2024They Hunt As Good As They Look with Lee Currens
Lee Currens is one of the best-known personalities in the wide world of coonhounds. Noted for his big-winning Treeing Walkers at major coonhound shows, Currens is a strong proponent of dual-purpose hounds that hunt as good as they look. Growing up on a central Kentucky dairy farm, Currens developed a skill set for showing livestock early on with his family’s registered Jersey cattle. Always taking pride in the animals he presented, the transition to coonhound showing and winning big while doing so, was an easy transition.
In this interview Chris and Steve cover myriad subjects with Currens including coon hunting as a boy on the Kentucky River, attending early competition hunts, meeting and hunting with many of coon hunting’s most famous personalities, John Monroe, Elmer Harrod and Billy Stinson to name a few, and his involvement in building foundations of popular strains of Treeing Walkers that endure today. Lee discusses his commitment to never hunt an ugly dog. Perhaps his crowning achievement is revealed in discussions about his mentoring several young people into the lifestyle.
The interview spotlights a side of the guest that his extensive exposure as a show person has not revealed before. Currens’ experience with, and knowledge of hunting with hounds supersedes his many accomplishments in the show rings. His winsome personality, understanding of hounds and his longstanding involvement as an extreme houndsman is all here to enjoy in this episode.

October 08, 2024Falconry Chronicles Episode 136: Brett Rees
Our guest for this episode, Brett Rees, was one that I was happy to get a chance to record while at the Texas Hawking Assocation meet earlier this year. Being the creative mind behind the Devils of Dirthawking Club, I've been a big fan of Brett's work for awhile, and it was a pleasure getting a chance to talk to him more about his inspiration behind starting the club, his artwork, and his beginnings in falconry. If you want to pick up more of his merch, head to devilsofdirthawking.com. He just came up with some new designs, including a limited edition collaboration with another friend of the podcast, Baba Yaga Crafts!
