“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.” ~ Sun Tzu

The Hunting Kind has a clear strategy, strong team and great leadership. Ed Swales is a retired soldier and international security advisor. He is also a life long hunter and houndsman. After being away from his roots during his service he returned to life without hunting in his homeland of the United Kingdom. Jolly Old England had traded centuries of tradition, culture and lifestyle for a liberal progressive scheme that gutted the hunting traditions that had protected wildlife and the agricultural community.

Chris and Ed have an in depth conversation about the organization that Ed founded: the Hunting Kind.

The Hunting Kind is an organization that is using multiple strategies to restore hunting and hunters rights and freedoms. This includes a movement to legally recognize hunters as an ethnic group and bring hunters under the protections of ant discrimination laws.

This is a brilliant idea and Ed lays it out perfectly.

Success, for houndsmen of all persuasions, depends upon the performance of quality hounds that are bred to do the job. Top-performing hounds are the products of those skilled in the art of breeding dogs. Whether the proving ground is a cornfield-bordered Midwestern woodlot, a moss-draped southern swamp or a cliff-laced southwestern canyon, regardless the type of game the breeding behind the hound will largely determine the success of the hunt.

In this episode, Chris and Steve interview Treeing Walker breeder Randy Smith whose Lone Pine Treeing Walker kennel in Pennsylvania has produced several winners in the fast-paced arena of competitive raccoon hunting, America’s largest organized sporting dog activity. Smith and his partner Tom Strang won the 2016 World Championship for coonhounds sanctioned by the world’s largest coonhound registry, United Kennel Club and have made numerous appearances in the finals of the most prestigious events in the sport.

Chris and Steve explore Smith’s background, his philosophy on breeding hounds and the keys to his success as a hound breeder and competitor. Smith’s portfolio of non-hound related outdoor pursuits, including fur trapping nationwide and trophy pike fishing above the Arctic Circle, typifies the extreme performance mindset of our guest, embodied in each episode of the Houndsman XP podcast.

Adam O Donnell and Chris talk about squirrel dogs. From the original purposes and traditional uses on the early frontier to modern day high performance tree dogs, the mountain cur is truly an American original.

Adam is a director for the Original Mountain Cur Breeders Association (OMCBA)  and an accomplished competition hunter with beginnings in the hound world and then transitioning to squirrel dogs. Adam and Chris discuss the history of the mountain cur and how it has evolved from a utilitarian type dog in the colonial and early American era dog to a high performance tree dog in modern times.  They discuss the rocky and questionable past of the largest cur dog registry, the OMCBA and get into training tips and strategies for cur dog owners.

This is officially the last of the episodes that were recorded in New Jersey last summer for the ongoing episodes inspired by dachshunds in falconry! You'll still be hearing about dachshunds off and on for a little while, but as far as the falconers who use them in and around that area, this episode with Zack Bohn will be the last one featured from there for a bit. We of course cover other important topics in this episode, particularly Zack's background studying environmental sciences and working in parks and recreation for a town he resides in, and some of the issues he's had to deal with in that realm, like invasive feral cats wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. Special thanks again to the New Jersey crew and Casey Everett for helping to orchestrate those recordings!

We're back to Texas again for another episode that was recorded earlier this year at the Texas Hawking Assocation meet! Our guest for this episode, Matt Reidy, was also a guest speaker at said meet, and in between hunting and evening activities, sat down to talk about flying longwings (especially prairie falcons), his career as a biologist, and lots of other good stuff, including common themes in falconry that are always important to hear. You'll be hearing more out of a lot of other Texas falconers in the coming weeks, being as there's still a lot of episodes yet to be published from the THA meet, so have fun listening!

You’ve been anticipating this moment your entire life. You’ve scouted this buck, placed your stands, planned your entry and exit routes. You’ve spent hour upon hour honing your skills. All your preparation comes together for this moment. The buck is calm, he has no idea you’re there, you are at full draw. He just needs to take a half of a step and he will be in the perfect spot. He takes it and just as he does you feel a whisper of breeze on the back of your neck. The buck raises his head and looks your way. It is now or never. Send It!

Did you make a good shot? The buck did duck and turn. The hit was a little far back but it felt good. It should be ok. Not perfect but pretty good. What you as a hunter does next will greatly effect your degree of success. Do you get down and look for blood? Your arrow? Wait? Push? So many questions? Should I call a tracker and a blood trailing dog?

Shon Butler of Longspur Tracking and Outfitting joins Chris on this episode of the Houndsman XP Podcast to discuss blood tracking. Shon talk about tips and tricks to increase your success. He outlines some major mistakes. He talks about how to be prepared before you ever take the shot.
