Welcome back to MJ English. You know how sometimes English can be a little tricky? Well, today we're going to take a deep dive into something super common that I bet you use almost every day.

And that's how to answer the question.

我們要講的就是怎麼回答這個問題：

Oh, how are you?

「How are you?（你好嗎？）」

How are you?

「How are you?」

Yeah. Yeah.

對啊，對啊。

And you know, we all learned I'm fine, thank you. And you in our textbooks,

我們大家以前在課本裡學到的回答通常是「I’m fine, thank you. And you?」

it's exactly it's a very classic textbook answer. But um what's interesting is that native speakers don't really use it so much in everyday conversations.

沒錯，這是課本上經典的標準回答，但有趣的是母語人士其實在日常對話中很少這樣說。

Yeah. I honestly it just it sounds kind of

對啊，說實話，這樣講起來有點…

Yeah. It can sound a little blah or like just Okay. Like Yeah. You know, 48 out of 100.

會讓人覺得有點乾或只是普普通通，大概就像 100 分裡的 48 分這樣。

So if you actually feel good.

What are some better ways to say that?

Yeah. So a really easy and natural way to say you're doing well is to simply say I'm good or I'm doing good.

其實有個很簡單又自然的說法就是：「I’m good」或「I’m doing good」。

I'm good.

「I’m good.」

Yeah.

對！

Okay.

好。

I'm doing good.

「I’m doing good.」

I'm doing good.

也是可以。

Simple and positive.

這些都很簡單，而且很正面。

Now, what if you're feeling even better? better than just good. Like you're feeling fantastic.

那如果你今天心情比「不錯」還要好，非常棒，像是超級開心那種呢？

If you're feeling great, then you can say I'm great or I'm doing great.

如果你真的覺得超棒，你可以說「I’m great」或「I’m doing great」。

It shows a much stronger positive feeling.

這樣的說法能更強烈表達你的好心情。

What about okay,

那「okay」又是怎麼樣的狀況呢？

right? So, I'm okay is more similar to I'm fine.

其實「I’m okay」就跟「I’m fine」蠻像的。

Okay.

喔～懂了。

Um, it could also give people the impression that you're only like uh missing barely doing okay.

它會讓人感覺你只是「還行啦」，可能心情普普通通，沒什麼特別。

Barely okay.

就只是勉強還過得去的那種感覺。

Yeah. So, if you feel better than just okay, you know, try one of the other options,

對啊～所以如果你比「okay」還好，那就試試前面講的那些更自然的回答吧！

right? So, like we were saying before, Let's all try to move away from fine and okay, especially if we're feeling good.

所以我們才會說，如果你今天心情不錯，就盡量別用「fine」或「okay」，換個說法會更自然。

Now, what about the opposite? What if you're having a bad day?

那反過來呢？如果你今天心情不好，該怎麼回答？

Yeah.

對啊。

What are some easy ways to tell people that?

有什麼簡單又自然的方式可以讓別人知道你過得不太好？

You can keep it simple and say, "I'm not good or I'm not doing good."

你可以直接說：「I'm not good.」或「I'm not doing good.」，簡單明瞭。

I'm not good. Okay.

「I'm not good.」了解，這樣講 OK。

And another common expression is could be better.

還有一個常見的說法是：「Could be better.」

Could be better.

「Could be better.」

Which kind of implies that things aren't great, but you're hoping for some improvement.

這種講法的意思是「最近不怎麼樣，但希望會變好」。

Okay. I like that one. Yeah. Could be better.

我喜歡這個說法，「Could be better」，蠻好用的。

What about if you're just a little bit under the weather? Like maybe you've got a little sniffle. Oh yeah.

那如果只是有點不舒服，比如說小感冒、流鼻水呢？

Can you still say I'm fine or I'm okay in that situation?

這種情況下還能用「I'm fine」或「I'm okay」嗎？

Yeah. If it's just a minor thing, I'm fine or I'm okay are perfectly acceptable.

可以的，如果只是小症狀，用「I'm fine」或「I'm okay」都很合理。

Okay. Those are okay in that case.

了解，那這種情況下講「I'm fine」是 OK 的。

Now, what about if you're just feeling kind of neutral, like not particularly good or bad? Yeah.

那如果你今天就只是普通，沒有特別開心或特別難過呢？

How can you answer how are you then?

這時候「How are you?」該怎麼回答？

Well, for those situations, you can say I'm good or I'm doing good. You could also say same as usual.

這種情況你可以說「I'm good」或「I'm doing good」，也可以說「Same as usual.（一如往常）」。

Same as usual,

「Same as usual」

meaning you know, nothing's really different.

意思就是「一切都跟平常差不多」。

Or not bad is also a pretty common response.

或者你也可以說「Not bad（還不錯）」，這也是很常見的回答。

Not bad. Okay. So, those are good for like an average day.

「Not bad」，了解。這些回答適合那種普通的一天。

Exactly.

沒錯。

Okay. Cool. So, we've talked about feeling okay, good, and not so good. What if you want to like really express how amazing you're feeling, right?

太好了，所以我們剛才講到怎麼表達普通、好、還有不太好的心情。那如果你真的心情超好，想要表現得更誇張一點，該怎麼說？

So, if you want to really emphasize your positive feelings, you could use phrases like I'm great or better than ever.

如果你真的想強調你心情超棒的話，可以說「I'm great（我超棒）」或「Better than ever（比以前都好）」。

Better than ever.

「Better than ever」

Yeah. Better than ever means you're feeling the best you have in a long time.

「Better than ever」表示你現在的狀況是你很久以來最棒的。

So, basically what we've learned today is that instead of defaulting to I'm fine all the time, we have a whole bunch of other options that can more accurately reflect how we're actually feeling.
