You know, sometimes you just want to talk about the weather. You know,

how's the weather? What what's it doing out there? Right.

有時候，我們就是會聊到天氣，像是問：「天氣怎麼樣？外面是什麼天氣？」

But like you said, there's only so many times you can say it's raining.

但就像你說的，總不能一直只說「It's raining」（在下雨）。

Yeah, it's raining. It gets old after a while.

對啊，老是這樣講，真的會有點無聊。

Especially if it's like really coming down out there.

特別是當外面下超大時，只說「It's raining」就不夠了。

Exactly.

So, that's what we're going to look at today. All the different ways to talk about rain in English.

Going way beyond just the basic word rain.

所以，今天我們就要來看看英文裡各種不同的「雨」的說法，不只是單純的「rain」。

That's right. And, you know, learning these little extra, you know,

nuances can make your conversations a lot more interesting and even help you better understand English weather reports and things like that.

Okay, so we all know the word rain, but let's say it's a really, really rainy day. How would you describe that?

好，我們都知道「rain」這個詞，但如果今天下超大雨，我們要怎麼形容呢？

Well, the most common way to say big rain in English is heavy rain.

最常見的說法就是「heavy rain」（大雨）。

Heavy rain.

「Heavy rain」。

Heavy rain. That's easy enough, right?

「Heavy rain」，這很簡單，對吧？

Yeah, totally. Like it's heavy rain today.

對啊，像是「今天下大雨」（It’s heavy rain today）。

Exactly. Okay. What about downpour?

沒錯！那「downpour」呢？

Downpour is a great word. It's for that sudden really heavy rain.

You know, like when you get caught in an afternoon thunderstorm or one of those sudden strong showers

and you're like completely soaked before you can even find shelter.

「Downpour」指的是那種突如其來的傾盆大雨，像是午後雷陣雨，或是突然下超大的陣雨，

讓你來不及找地方躲就全身濕透了。

Yeah, totally been there. Downpour is a perfect word for that.

對啊，我完全懂！「Downpour」用來形容這種情況超級貼切。

Awesome. So then we've got heavy rain. We've got downpour. What about torrential rain?

太棒了！所以我們有「heavy rain」、「downpour」，那「torrential rain」呢？

Oo. Oo, torrential rain. Now we're talking.

哦，「torrential rain」，這就比較厲害了！

Now it's getting serious.

這是很嚴重的雨勢了。

This is the serious stuff. Torrential rain is a much more formal way to talk about extremely heavy rain.

這真的很嚴重！「Torrential rain」是一個更正式的說法，專門用來形容極端的大雨。

Like the kind of rain that can cause flooding.

像是那種會引發洪水的大雨。

Okay.

了解。

You know, you might hear this word on the news when they're reporting on like severe weather events and things like that.

這個詞通常會出現在新聞報導中，特別是提到嚴重天氣災害時。

Yeah. Torrential rain. I think I would only use that word

if I was like looking out the window and the street was starting to flood.

對，「torrential rain」這個詞感覺要用在那種，你看著窗外，發現馬路快淹起來的時候。

Exactly. It's definitely a word for those more extreme situations.

沒錯！這個詞比較適合用在極端氣候情況下。

Gotcha. So, we've covered like the big rain words.

But what about if it's not like super crazy rain?

What if it's just like a little bit rainy out there?

懂了！我們剛剛講了形容大雨的詞，那如果只是小雨呢？

Well, you can always just say light rain.

你可以用「light rain」（小雨）。

Light rain.

「Light rain」。

Light rain. It's pretty general. It covers most of those gentler rainy situations,

you know, like when you can see the rain falling,

but it's not really heavy enough to like disrupt your day or anything

「Light rain」是個很常見的說法，適用於大多數的輕微降雨，像是你看得到雨，但不至於影響你的日常活動。

Oh, what about drizzle? Is drizzle the same as light rain or is it even lighter?

那「drizzle」呢？它跟「light rain」是一樣的嗎？還是更細小？

Drizzle is even lighter. It's that very fine misty rain that almost Feels like fog.

「Drizzle」比「light rain」還要輕微，是那種像霧一樣細細的雨。

You might not even need an umbrella for drizzle. Maybe just like a light jacket if anything.

下「drizzle」時，你可能連雨傘都不需要，頂多穿件薄外套就夠了。

So, it's kind of like just a damp mist in the air.

所以它更像是一種潮濕的霧氣。

Pretty much.

差不多就是這樣。

Okay.

了解。

Yeah. So, we've got like light rain. We've got drizzle. And then we've got one more that I was thinking about. Showers.

所以我們有「light rain」、「drizzle」，然後還有一個我要提的——「showers」。

Oh, yes. Showers. That's another good one because it tells you something about how long the rain is going to last.

對！「Showers」這個詞很棒，因為它也暗示了這場雨可能不會下太久。

Showers are those short but kind of intense bursts of rain that you might get in the afternoon or the evening.

「Showers」指的是短時間但可能強度不小的降雨，通常發生在下午或晚上。

I like those pop-up summer showers. Like the kind of thing where it's perfectly sunny all day and then suddenly around like 4:00 it just starts pouring for like an hour.

我喜歡那種夏天的午後陣雨，整天都大晴天，然後突然到下午四點就開始下一小時的陣雨。

Yeah. You often hear showers in the weather forecast, too.

對啊，天氣預報裡常常會聽到「showers」這個詞。

Yeah. You know, they'll say something like there's a chance of showers later today.

沒錯，他們會說：「今天稍晚有可能出現陣雨。」

Awesome. So there you have it lots of ways to talk about rain in English.

太棒了！所以這就是各種不同的「雨」的英文說法！

So much more interesting than just saying it's raining all the time.

這比一直說「It’s raining」有趣多了吧！

Exactly. And you know, the more you use these words in your own conversations, the more natural they'll become.
