Matt Gary is the owner of Supreme Sports Performance & Training in Rockville Maryland where his wife, a 25 time (yes, 25 times) National Powerlifting champion and five time world champion trains and coaches alongside him. The Maryland Powerlifting Association website has a link dedicated to “Matt Gary Articles” on it!
Matt’s humble approach to coaching has earned him the opportunity to be the chairman of the coaching committee for the USAPL. He was the 2012 USAPL coach of the year, and he is a competitive lifter himself.
I was there when Matt suffered a major, life changing injury on the competitive platform while attempting a PR back squat of 501#. He tore just about everything in his leg at the same time and Matt says that this injury has made him a profoundly better coach. In this episode we get into what he means by that. We also talk about what it’s like to coach the most accomplished powerlifter in American history (his wife), and what it takes to coach an athlete who owns a back squat of over 1,000 pounds.
