Soaring Child: Thriving with ADHD

11: Training Teachers to Help Kids with ADHD Succeed with Cindy Goldrich

Listen Later

On this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, we had a conversation with Cindy Goldrich. Cindy is a mental health counselor, certified ADHD Clinical Service Provider, and teacher trainer. As a teacher trainer, she holds a big responsibility in training teachers how to properly work with kids with ADHD and other disabilities.

We dive into topics such as what the first steps are in teaching how to help with emotional kids, understanding key elements of working memory, and the importance of using simple steps when teaching. Above all, patience is the most important component of working with emotional kids. Dealing with ADHD can be tough, so it’s very important that parents maintain a close relationship with their child’s teacher to make sure they are following the proper steps.

Memorable quotes:

“The first thing I want teachers to understand is what it’s like to be this child. What it’s like to be this child in the classroom.”

“Whether the teacher is a kindergarten teacher or a middle school teacher or a high school teacher, I think it’s really important for them to have that understanding so that they can work more fairly with the student.”

“One of the first things I do is help them understand executive functioning for all people, because we all have executive functioning.”

“When people ask me what I do for a living, I say I manage parental anxiety. I help teachers calm their class down.”

“I really help teachers and parents understand how to empower their students so they feel like they have a role and a responsibility for what's going on in their lives.”

“What I think teachers need to do is teach everybody how the brain works, and that some people’s brains get more activated when they move.”

“They actually found that chewing gum for some kids will help them do better on a test.”
