When things become familiar to us, we no longer acknowledge them. The drone of cicadas in the background becomes impossible to hear unless you’re really listening. The pile of papers on the table becomes impossible to see unless you’re reminded they need to move. Things that no longer pose a threat, become obsolete to our focus.
This is the same thing that happens with “the good stuff”. There is good stuff buzzing all around us, all day, every day. But because it doesn’t pose a threat, our brains set it aside as safe, and eventually we start to ignore the good altogether.
Sometimes the change is the thing we notice + we tend to emphasize the discomfort we feel from the transition, rather than the comfort we receive once we’re settled into the change.
