We all know that having boundaries and setting boundaries is essential if we are to have healthy, enjoyable, relationships. There needs to be a clear line between ourselves and others, where we begin and they end, otherwise our relationships become controlling, co-dependence and enmeshed.
Yet the idea of setting boundaries terrifies most of us. We fear we won’t be heard or that our desires will be ignored, and most off all, we fear that if we set boundaries the relationship might end all together.
Therefore, most of us swallow our feelings or laugh it off when someone crosses a line, or we justify their behavior by thinking, “it’s just the way they are.” And when we do that, nothing ever changes, resentment builds, and our relationships suffer. Therefore, it’s time to talk about setting healthy boundaries.
