Soaring Child: Thriving with ADHD

16: Neurodevelopment with Dr. Aimie Apigian

Listen Later

As parents, we want the absolute best for our children, but it's hard when our child is not confiding in us for important events that may have a significant effect on their behavior. What seems like a minor issue for one may seem like the sky is falling for another, so we should definitely be paying more attention to how our children react to certain situations.

In this episode, Dr. Aimie Apigian shares why we're in an epidemic of overly anxious kids and adults, how we need to redefine what trauma actually is, how trauma therapy differs from traditional therapy, and more. We also talk about how traumatic events can be passed down from the mother's nervous system to the child's and how neurodevelopment plays a huge factor in ADHD and other mental disabilities amongst children.

Dr. Aimie is a Board-Certified Preventive Medicine physician, speaker, and founder of Trauma Healing Accelerated, LLC, Family Challenge Camps, and host of Bio-Optimize Summit. Today, she is here to talk about all things trauma and how to properly deal with it instead of finding ways to suppress it.

Memorable Quotes:

  • "One's attachment style actually just refers to their relationship with the world and themselves, coming out of childhood."
  • "So you can have an avoidant attachment style, an anxious attachment style, you can have this disorganized attachment style, where it's a combination of both avoidant and anxious. And then you can have a healthy style, which is what we all want our kids to have, which is, you know, we're secure."
  • "As parents, we do our best. And what happens is that, as parents, we are passing on our nervous system to our children. Even when we think, oh, I won't show them that side of myself, I won't show them my insecurities, I won't show them my fears… And yet, whatever our nervous system is, we pass that on to our children, and that happens non-verbally."
  • "It's so important for us to be able to recognize these patterns in ourselves and know that most children are coming out of their childhood with a degree of insecurity. And it's setting them up with a life that feels hard and lonely."
  • "One of the things actually that gives me a sense of how much trauma is in the child is the eye-contact. When I'm watching them engage with mom, how much eye-contact do they give mom? For some of the more severely traumatized kids I've worked with… they will only be able to look at their mom when they are lying to her."
  • "Parents need to be the answer for their children. That's what they're looking for. Children are looking for their parents to be the answer… It's not possible to actually heal trauma when we send our children away to somebody else. We've got to do that work."
