In this episode I catch up with New Zealand based musician Sam Cooper. Sam is 28 years old and at the time of recording has been 17 months sober. Sam, a shy kid by nature found that drinking first gave him confidence to talk to girls and to clown around. When some of his wild and uncharacteristic behaviours were caught on camera and posted on the internet, Sam started to gain popularity and a new found label that was not at all anything like his true nature. Embarrassed but also feeling buoyed by his status Sam continued on the path of self destruction until it led to dangerous and humiliating territory and he decided it was time to stop.
Sam, an incredibly beautiful piano player, found that removing booze gave him the time, clarity and inspiration to spend more time writing music and he has written some hauntingly beautiful new pieces based on his journey.
