In this episode of Jimmy Makes Science Simple on the LLVLC Show, Jimmy tackles a study that looks into whether a combination of exogenous ketones and hypocaloric keto can increase fat loss.
“You have to continuously drink ketones to maintain the levels in your blood.”
Jimmy Moore
Welcome to Jimmy Moore’s brand new show JIMMY MAKES SCIENCE SIMPLE where he breaks down the latest nutritional health studies into language that makes them easier for you to understand and apply to your life.
Today we have a fantastic March 24, 2021 study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition entitled “The Effects of a 6-Week Controlled, Hypocaloric Ketogenic Diet, With and Without Exogenous Ketone Salts, on Body Composition Responses.”
READ THE STUDY HERE:

Dr. Jeff Volek and his team of fellow researchers at The Ohio State University wanted to see if there was any difference in fat loss and other body composition changes with the addition of exogenous ketones twice daily over a 6-week period with a hypocaloric ketogenic diet vs. a ketogenic diet with a placebo (a low-fat group was also added as a control). The theory is that supplementing with additional beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) would result in muscle preservation as well as an increase in body fat loss over keto alone. But that’s not what happened.
There was no difference in weight loss or fat loss between the groups and after the first two weeks there was no difference in blood ketone concentrations. In other words, the endogenous production took over after adaptation and provided all the benefits they needed. Gee, imagine that!
Anyone pushing exogenous ketone supplements on you as a weight loss tool REALLY need to read this study and realize just how much they are lying to their clients and customers. Don’t fall for the marketing gimmicks and the sad sob stories of how their life has been changed because they drink ketones. You can make all the ketones you need endogenously through carbohydrate restriction. Nuff said!
