Most of us are familiar with bad job interviews. The interviewer asks all of the typical questions, the potential employee uses all of the “correct” answers, and both parties have wasted 30 minutes of their lives. As an employer, this is dangerous because you may end up hiring someone that turns out to be a terrible fit in your company, and as an employee, you may find yourself being employed in a position that you hate.
This week, we’re joined by Executive Coach, and former Headhunter, Jeff Altman. Through his coaching practice, The Big Game Hunter, Inc.” and podcast, “No B.S. Job Search Advice Radio”, Jeff helps Executives in the job hiring process.
We talk about the detrimental side effects of a poor job interview, what to look for in a candidate, and Jeff shares some of his favorite questions to ask potential employees.
3:56 Jeff talks about how he got into the head hunter game
5:50 Jeff goes through the top things he teaches his clients when they’re in the hiring process. The biggest thing being, how to truly assess potential employees.
12:29 Job descriptions are ~80% accurate. It’s important to understand exactly what you, as the employer, are looking for. He also shares the first question that he asks potential employees - a question that will immediately weed out the unqualified.
19:56 As a leader, you need to inspire, not motivate.
23:37 Jeff talks through his process of hiring. From the beginning steps of searching based on skills, all the way to the job offer.
27:45 Jeff reveals more of the questions he would ask during interviews.
