Cardiologist Dr. Eric Thorn and registered nurse Marylou Van Hintum are our interview guests today in Episode 881 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.”
One of the most exciting developments that has been happening within the medical community over the past few years is a growing tide of healthcare providers who have become frustrated by the failure of the traditional model for medicine and are willing to look outside the box in treating their patients through nutrition and lifestyle modalities as the first option rather than so quickly turning to a prescription medication. Today's podcast interview guests certainly fit that mold. They are an Arlington, Virginia-based cardiologist and obesity medicine physician named Dr. Eric Thorn and a real food-based registered nurse named Marylou VanHintum. Together they joined forces to open the Center for Cardio-Metabolic Health and Weight Loss in September 2012 providing medically-supervised, nutritional rehabilitation to treat metabolic syndrome, promote weight loss, reduce risk for heart disease, and improve overall quality of life. The nutritional plan they incorporated with their patients is a low-carb, high-fat diet with real, whole foods that help heal the damage that has accumulated over years, even decades, and the patients receive personalized follow-up to help them with their specific individualized needs to lose weight and get healthy.
Listen in to hear Jimmy, Dr. Thorn, and Marylou share about how they came to low-carb nutrition from within the traditional medical establishment, how they came to realize how low-carb nutrition could be used as a powerful tool for promoting optimal health, why weight loss isn't really the primary focus of their work with patients, how a cardiologist is able to talk about eating high-fat foods like bacon without getting ostracized by his colleagues, the impact of stress on your health during transitional periods in our lives (as Dr. Thorn and Marylou are currently going through parting ways but continuing their work with patients), and a whole lot more! Jimmy met these two at the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) meeting a couple of years ago and this was such an intriguing discussion about the future of health and the intricate role nutrition will have to play in patient health in the coming years.
