Narcissists exert control over others by manipulating their emotions.  They thrive on it.

Dr Melanie Salmon's mother was a narcissist and when Melanie was a child her mother told her a secret.  A secret she was to tell nobody.  And this secret allowed her mother to exert control over Melanie and her emotions for many years!
