A Glimpse Into A Dad’s Journey

Listen Later

Since our line of work mainly involves working with moms, I’ve always longed to see dads supported more in the beginning phase of a family.  How can dads be better supported?

In today’s episode, Lynn talks with Chris Da Silva, a primary care doctor from the UK, about pregnancy and postpartum from a dad’s perspective and about his program 40 Weeks for Dads.

The uncertainties around pregnancy, birth, and life with a newborn create shifts in both men and women. Fear can be a response to these uncertainties and women often see this fear response come out as weird behavior in their male partners. As men step into their role of dad and navigate what it means to be a provider and protector for their families, it can cause a disconnect between partners as dad does not want to burden mom with his fears.

Communication and grace are the keys to navigating these fears and unknowns. If partners can talk about ways to support one another through the ups and downs of parenthood, then they can overcome those fears together and set up communication channels that will support the family dynamics in the years ahead.

Men also tend to do well with feedback and feel better when they get direction on what they can do to help. Finding what is needed for every family takes a bit of trial and error, as no one family is the same; therefore, having grace will also go a long way.
