Welcome to the November 2022 “5 in 5” edition of A Gluten Free Podcast! In this episode, I sit down with Penny Dellsperger, Health Advocacy Officer at Coeliac Australia, to discuss some exciting updates and important news for the gluten free and coeliac community.

First up, Penny shares her insights from the recent Melbourne Gluten Free Expo 2022, one of Australia’s largest events dedicated to gluten free living. We discuss the atmosphere, the exhibitors, and the valuable information shared with attendees. Whether you were able to attend or missed out this year, Penny gives a great overview of what was happening and what to expect next time.

The main focus of our chat is the introduction of the new Plain English Allergen Labelling (PEAL) laws, designed to make allergen information on food packaging clearer and easier to understand. Penny explains what these changes mean for gluten declarations on ingredient lists and how the ‘contains’ statements will be updated to better protect people with coeliac disease and other food allergies.

PEAL is a significant step forward in food safety and consumer awareness. We discuss the impact this will have on food manufacturers, retailers, and, most importantly, people living with coeliac disease who rely on accurate labelling to make safe food choices.
