Today’s guest is Lisa Popeil.

Lisa is a prominent voice teacher, voice researcher, musician, author and workshop presenter. Lisa shares her music industry experiences as a female recording artist who emerged in the 1980’s and how she has managed to sustain an enduring career in the industry by understanding the significance of resilience, tenacity and reinvention as a performing artist. Lisa describes how she has successfully transitioned across a variety of roles within the industry fuelled by her keen enthusiasm to learn, her natural curiosity and her love for music and the singing voice. This is a rare insight into Lisa’s personal and professional journey touring and performing with artists such as Frank Zappa and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Today's guest is Ashlie Amber.

Ashlie Amber is a singer, actress and entertainer who is in the midst of an incredible music career as a black recording artist in Nashville, a music culture that historically has not embraced gender equality or diversity. As a child, she discovered the power of music and developed a deep connection to country music. However, as she began to pursue her professional career, she was stereotyped as an artist and was encouraged to sing music styles exclusively associated with black culture. In this episode, Ashlie Amber speaks candidly about her journey in the pursuit of her dream to become the “Beyonce” of country music. She shares with us that success has little to do with vocal ability and that social media, branding, a solid business and marketing plan, and the ability to negotiate contracts are vital for a career in the music industry.

Gillyanne and Jeremy candidly share their philosophies on a “one size fits all” and a “one method” approach to teaching singers. Dr Gillyanne Kayes is a voice researcher, trainer and singing voice expert, internationally recognised for her insight into function of the singing voice. Her books include the groundbreaking Singing and the Actor, Successful Singing Auditions, the Singing Express series, and This is a Voice commissioned by the Wellcome Trust. She has presented on singing voice at numerous conferences around the world, including PEVOC, PAS, EuroVox, ANATS, NEWZATS, BVA and ATHE. In her doctoral research Gillyanne investigated acoustic, physiological and perceptual aspects of female voice use in different genres. Her current mission is to influence and inspire vocal trainers to collaborate and grow.

Jeremy Fisher is a national prizewinning collaborative pianist, CPD accredited vocal coach and multiple bestselling author (7 books) on vocal and performance techniques. He has performed in every venue imaginable, including a tank museum, a department store window, in front of the royal family at Madame Tussauds, and 150 feet underground in a pothole. Jeremy has created many voice training resources including books, CDs, DVDs, Webinars, presentations, online streaming courses and a #1 app on Google Play – his goal is to get clear, practical singing information out in whatever format works for the singer. He uses a combination of cutting-edge vocal physiology, high-level musicianship and performance intuition to help singers and singing teachers find their own unique voice and style.

Today's guest is Donna Cameron.

As a society, we’re full of stress and anxiety and these issues can consume us. Often it is our thoughts, our situations, both past and present as well as worrying about the future that can become extremely overwhelming. So how do we recognise when we are feeling stressed or suffering from anxiety? How do we address these issues when we still feel shame in admitting that we are in need of help? As a voice community, not only do we have to be our best selves when we show up to work every day, but so many of those we serve are also suffering from these silent illnesses.

In today’s episode, Donna Cameron, who is a registered psychologist with over 16 years -experience, dives deep into describing the symptoms and warning signs of stress and anxiety, the physical, mental and emotional changes that occur in our bodies when we are experiencing those conditions, and how our community and health system currently deal with these issues. Donna discusses how managing your stress cup is a powerful tool to help overcome these difficult health problems. She also offers an insight into the impact of COVID-19 on mental health in our society and shares some practical strategies that the voice teaching community can implement to deal with these issues in the studio, especially with students who are in need of attention.

Donna has been a qualified psychologist for over 16 years working with children, adolescents, adults for anxiety, breakups and marriage/couples counselling . Based on her knowledge and experiences, she has written a self-help book called “Managing Your Stress Cup” and has a podcast “On the Couch with Donna Cameron”. She is often called upon to comment in printed publications and on the News. Donna is passionate about helping people and presents them with practical strategies that they can understand and implement. Her aim is to take the fear out of mental health and feels that when clients understand the language of their emotions that they can then make positive changes in their lives and for their mental health.

Today's guest is Dr. Elizabeth Blades.

Elizabeth describes her regime of self-care and how this program of self-care was crucial to her healing journey in the midst of turmoil. Elizabeth so generously shares her story, offers us her perspectives, and life philosophies. Elizabeth also explains how our intuition is smarter than our brain and we must trust what our intuition is trying to tell us. Her attitude of “This too shall pass” is extremely profound and is one that can help us all during these times of chaos and the anxiety of today’s society. 

Elizabeth Blades, is currently a visiting Instructor of Music for the Performing Arts Division, School of Art and Design at Alfred University where she is teaching classes in voice and piano. In addition Elizabeth serves on the faculty of Shenandoah University, in Winchester, VA. She is the author of A Spectrum of Voices: Prominent American Voice Teachers Discuss the Teaching of Singing and co-authored with Samuel Nelson Singing with Your Whole Self: The Singer’s Guide to Feldenkrais Awareness through Movement. She also presents national and international workshops connected with her research in Moshe Feldenkrais and the Feldenkrais Method in vocal training. In October 2020 Elizabeth delivered the keynote address for the National Conference of the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing

She is the founder and director of Vocalhealthworks, dedicated to advancing healthy vocal technique rehabilitating injured or endangered voices. She also founded and was producer/artistic director of the Allens Park Performing Arts Company, based in Allens Park Colo., which launched its maiden season in 2011.

A native of Hornell, NY, she recently returned to her hometown where she sings in the choir of Christ Episcopal Church.
