ADHD and Schools: The Executive Functioning Conundrum

Listen Later

Got ADHD? How did you enjoy your school experience? Odds are, you experienced feelings of frustration, disappointment, overwhelm, and shame. There are many well-intentioned people and expensive structures designed to help those with neurodiversity to move through the school system. The challenge is that teachers’ and students’ needs sometimes compete, and students with ADHD are often misunderstood and underserved in the mainstream. In this episode of Attention Talk Radio, ADHD and attention coach Jeff Copper (https://digcoaching.com) interviews Dr. Laurie Faith (https://activatedlearning.org) of the University of Toronto in a conversation about the way that executive function deficits are handled at school. They talk about challenges that are unique to the classroom, but also the huge opportunities that are available in a classroom setting. By facilitating a “socially shared” approach, teachers can unlock student motivation, build student self-awareness and self-compassion, make a strategic mindset an integral part of every lesson, and engage in essential on-the-job learning about student needs.

Attention Talk Radio is the leading site for self-help Internet radio shows focusing on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder, including managing symptoms of ADHD in adults with ADD or adults who have children with ADHD.
