ADHD-ish™ ADHD Business Strategy for Busy Brains episodes

  • Beyond Motivation: Structuring Your Service Business for ADHD Highs and Lows

Running a service business with ADHD means your energy and focus will fluctuate—and that’s not a character flaw, it’s a business model challenge. In this episode, Diann Wingert shares why resilience matters more than motivation.

You’ll learn how to build a “floor, not a ceiling” across visibility, delivery, money, and strategy so your business keeps moving even during low‑capacity weeks. These insights help ADHD small business owners and founders create sustainable systems that protect momentum and prevent burnout.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 – ADHD entrepreneur highs and lows

05:20 – ADHD business coaching and planned pauses

11:45 – Structuring service businesses for capacity shifts

18:10 – Floors vs ceilings in business resilience

24:30 – Sustainable growth through planned pivots

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How to design your business for normal low-capacity fluctuations, not just crisis mode
    • Practical, step-by-step methods for setting the “floor” for visibility, delivery, money, and strategy
    • The reason your current systems probably break down when you need them most (hint: they were never built for the tough weeks)
    • The psychological block ADHD brains have with forward-planning—and how to outsmart it
    • Why most “reduced capacity” plans only address marketing, while money, strategy and delivery are overlooked
    • How to communicate these boundaries with clients up front, turning what could be perceived as a weakness into a sign of true professionalism

Not-so-Fun Fact : High-Capacity You Creates Unsustainable Systems

We start our business in a high-capacity state—full of ideas, clarity, and good intentions. Having ADHD means we have an impaired ability to imagine other neurological states than the one we are currently experiencing, causing a disconnect with our future low-capacity self.

That's why a couple of weeks of low mood-energy-motivation can trigger the belief we are in the wrong business and the urge to throw in the towel and start over with something new. What we need to do is build floors, not just fantasize about ceilings, or the same thing will happen with the next business.

These four business functions actually need a floor:

    1. Visibility: This is the first to go when things get tough. My “floor” here? One recycled social post, or a single email to a real human. Something tiny but consistent.
    2. Delivery: This is the trickiest. It feels like a betrayal to reduce what I deliver to clients, but as the podcast emphasized, negotiating a floor in advance—shorter meetings, async communication, or setting clear response times—turns a potential disaster into a professional, expected variation.
    3. Money: Invoicing, chasing payments, running the business side. This cannot drop to zero. If I automate one thing, this is it. Unsent invoices don’t just cost money, they quietly undermine everything else.
    4. Strategy: Maybe the one I used to ignore most. No big decisions during floor weeks. Defaults only. Don’t reinvent the wheel when energy’s low.

  • ADHD, Anxiety and the 4 Drivers That Shape Sustainable Work

Welcome to the ADHD-ish podcast, where we explore what it truly takes to build a thriving business when your brain is wired differently. In this episode, host Diann Wingert is joined by Morra Aarons-Mele to introduce the ATAMM framework; focusing on attention, time, agency, and motivation.

Many business owners with ADHD faces intense burnout by relying on anxiety-driven habits instead of honoring personal needs. This conversation provides practical strategies for establishing radical self-acceptance, mapping your unique chronotype, and shaping a sustainable ADHD business strategy.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 – Entrepreneur anxiety and ADHD drivers

05:10 – Coaching strategies for resilience in business

11:25 – Smarter growth tactics and ADHD business strategy

17:40 – Small business owner challenges and solutions

23:55 – Leadership focus: guiding teams with clarity

30:20 – Accountability and delegation tips for founders

36:35 – Scaling strategies that play to your strengths

42:50 – Burnout prevention and sustainable success habits

Morra shares insights from her ATAM framework, grounded in over two decades of research and thousands of interviews, which distills the struggles and success factors of neurodivergent professionals into four actionable domains:

    • Attention: Understanding your personal style, harnessing focus, and protecting against distractions.
    • Time: Navigating time blindness, building healthy schedules, and pacing to maximize presence and energy.
    • Agency: Having the power to structure your environment and processes in ways that support wellbeing.
    • Motivation: Identifying intrinsic and extrinsic motivators that actually work for you.

One surprising truth: Gaining control of your calendar, environment, and workflows doesn’t guarantee balance or fulfillment if you don’t understand your own wiring. In fact, you're more vulnerable to burnout because you're paying the "passion tax" and your brain doesn't have an "enoughness" monitor.

    Fun Fact From the Episode:

Did you know that delaying filling your gas tank (literally running on fumes) is an ADHD-ish trait? Not because of flakiness, but because life is more exciting when you turn everyday chores into a dopamine-driven game! Listen for this hilarious/ cringeworthy confession…

  • Your Brand Needs Repetition, But Your ADHD Brain Needs Novelty: What's the Solution?

Entrepreneurial ADHD brains crave novelty, often leading to constant rewrites of core messaging. Yet your audience has barely encountered your message, and reinvention blocks true recognition and authority.

Diann Wingert reveals how to keep claims consistent while channeling creativity into fresh angles. By building new doors into the same room, you achieve sustainable repetition that connects with your audience and grows your business.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Why Your Brand Needs Repetition but Your ADHD Brain Craves Novelty

05:00 - Why You Get Bored With Your Own Messaging Too Soon

12:00 - What to Keep Fixed in Your Brand and Messaging

20:00 - How to Use Novelty Without Changing Your Core Brand

28:00 - The Core Claim, SEO, and Building New Doors Into the Same Room

    Key takeaways:

    • Repetition is non-negotiable: Your audience hasn’t heard your core message nearly as many times as you have. Even the most engaged followers need 8+ exposures before it really sticks.
    • Novelty needs better boundaries: Put your creative energy into new stories, formats, and examples—but keep your core claim, signature frameworks, and offer language consistent for years, not weeks.
    • Build new doors, not new rooms: Use fresh angles to invite people in, but always lead them to the same core message. Changing your positioning too often kills your chance of becoming known, referred, and hired.

If you’re tempted to reinvent your message this month, pause and write your core claim in one sentence. Then, brainstorm three fresh “doors” (stories, formats, hooks) that point right back to it. Don’t let novelty wreck your focus—make it work FOR you.

  • The Impact of Emotional & Intellectual Intensity on Business, Relationships & Life

What if the problem isn’t that you’re too much—but that you’ve spent years trying to fit into environments that don’t understand your intensity? Diann Wingert and Imi Lo explore what emotional and intellectual intensity can look like, and why it often gets confused with ADHD, autism, giftedness, or other labels.

If you’ve ever felt misunderstood for feeling deeply, thinking intensely, asking too many questions, or struggling inside conventional systems, this conversation offers a different lens. You’ll learn how self-awareness, skillful communication, radical self-acceptance, and finding the right environments can help you work with your intensity rather than constantly judging yourself for it.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Introduction to Emotional and Intellectual Intensity in Business

05:52 - Navigating ADHD Entrepreneurship and High-Stakes Decisions

11:45 - The Role of ADHD Executive Function in Business Strategy

17:37 - Managing Cognitive Load and Avoiding ADHD Burnout

23:30 - Scaling a Business with ADHD and Team Leadership Dynamics

29:22 - How to Build a Sustainable Systems and ADHD Business Operations

35:15 - Fostering ADHD Self-Trust and Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

41:07 - Integrating Emotional Intensity for Long-Term ADHD Founder Success

    ‍ ‍

    Key takeaways:‍ ‍

Intensity is multi-dimensional: Intensity can be emotional (feeling deeply and persistently), intellectual (a hunger for knowledge and depth), or moral (strong principles and sensitivity to injustice). These can be visible or invisible and are often misunderstood by others.

Context matters more than labels: Before seeking a diagnosis or label, ask yourself if the real issue is a misfit with your environment. As Imi Lo shares, "Nothing is wrong with a plant that’s not growing in the wrong soil."

Strength & struggle go hand in hand: Intensity can lead to profound levels of creativity, empathy, and insight—but also overwhelm, isolation, and shame if not recognized or managed. The solution isn’t to shrink yourself, but to find (or create) environments where intensity is seen as an asset.

If you have internalized the message that you are "too much," consider this: Maybe your environment - not you - is the problem. Radical self acceptance, and the courage to stop apologizing for your intensity—could be your first step toward thriving.

  • ADHD-Friendly Marketing: Staying Visible Even When You Can’t Show Up

“Just be consistent” is frustrating advice for entrepreneurs with ADHD because capacity is anything but consistent. This episode examines why traditional marketing expectations can lead to overwork, burnout, or abandoning visibility altogether.

The Balanced Marketing Strategy introduces three complementary forms of marketing: algorithm-based, content-based, and relationship-based. Together, they create a more resilient visibility system that continues generating awareness, credibility, and opportunities during low-capacity weeks.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - Introduction: ADHD Business Strategy & Visibility Realities

04:30 - Breaking the Cycle: ADHD Burnout Prevention in Marketing

10:15 - Building Sustainable Business Systems for ADHD Entrepreneurs

15:45 - Executive Function in Business: Streamlining Content Creation

    20:10 - Stepping Up as an ADHD CEO: Long-Term Growth & Self-Trust

Here’s the ADHD-friendly reframe: Stop chasing consistency through effort—and start building consistency through structure.

‍It’s all about setting up a system that keeps your business visible even when you’re having a low-capacity week with the Balanced Marketing Strategy which utilizes three types of marketing efforts:‍ ‍

    1. Algorithm-Based Marketing: SEO, social media, and anything that’s discoverable through a machine. The beauty? Content you create once can keep working for you for months or even years.

    2. Content-Based Marketing: Your podcast, newsletter, blog—this is where your voice and expertise shine. It’s the main way you build connection and trust, but it does require creativity and energy. ‍

    3. Relationship-Based Marketing: Networking, referral partnerships, collaborations, guest appearances—the power of other people’s momentum carrying your visibility when you can’t.

    ‍How does it work?

These categories almost never all fail at once. If you're running low on capacity for content, your relationships or algorithmic assets can keep generating leads and visibility, and vice versa. Far too many business owners with ADHD find out the hard way that putting all their promotion eggs in one basket makes them vulnerable to complete visibility collapse during low-energy periods.

‍Your Redundant (Not Balanced) Safety Net

Despite the name, the "Balanced" Marketing Strategy isn’t about splitting your effort evenly. It’s about building in redundancy, so your visibility never hinges on you always being ‘on’. It’s like having a backup generator for your business.

    ‍Try This Mini Audit‍ ‍

    ● Look back at your last 90 days of marketing activities.

    ● Sort them into: algorithm-based, content-based, or relationship-based.

    ● Find your weak spot (the thinnest category) ‍

    ● Start building out the thin one - just to a functional minimum.

‍What’s a “functional minimum?” One evergreen asset, three referral relationships, one quarterly guest appearance

    3 Key Takeaways:

    • Find—and serve—the underserved audience. When you truly solve a need for people who’ve been overlooked, you can create explosive demand. Building something specifically for the ADHD community, with real-life empathy and nuance, was the game-changer
    • Prepare to adapt at warp speed. Virality can supercharge your business, but also breaks systems you thought could scale. Managing inventory, support, and planning for unpredictable spikes is a different beast
    • Don’t skip the foundations—even if you’re “too busy.” Invest in core systems you own—like email lists—not just social media channels. Otherwise, you’re at the mercy of algorithms or outside platforms.

  • Your Overthinking ADHD Brain Is the Best Thing About Your Brand

‍Kristina Flynn has had a psychiatrist since she was twelve, collected diagnoses like frequent flyer miles (anxiety, depression, OCD, bulimia, and more), and still didn't get an ADHD diagnosis until her thirties, after her daughter's birth blew up every workaround she'd been quietly running for two decades.

‍Now she runs Story EQ, where she helps people find the story underneath their work. Everybody tells you to stop overthinking. Kristina Flynn built a company on it.

‍We talk about why doing your own branding is a fool's errand (spoiler: your brain isn't primed for reality, it's primed for your perception of reality). We talk about the Mensa-level geniuses who sit across from her and say "I'm not that interesting."

‍We talk about the specific, weirdly universal terror of what your old colleagues will think. And we talk about AI — not as a voice replicator, but as something that can understand your context if you feed it properly.

‍Fair warning: if you're sitting on an abandoned rebrand, three different mission statements you don't believe, and a nagging sense that you should be further along by now — you're going to feel a little called out. Stay with us anyway. ‍

    WHAT’S INSIDE: ‍

    ● Why Your Old Story Isn’t the Whole Story: How narrative identity, negativity bias, and corporate conditioning have shaped the way you show up ‍

    ● The 4 Stories Framework (Stealable Worksheet): Start mapping your old story, bridge story, and how to shift from “it’s about me” to “it’s about them”

    ● Radical Self-Acceptance Checklist: 5 mindset shifts to finally move past shame, imposter feelings, and waiting for permission ‍

    ● Overthinking as an Asset: Quick exercises to turn rumination into action, content, and connection (instead of procrastination) ‍

ADHD-ish is hosted by Diann Wingert. If you got something out of this one, the single most useful thing you can do is send it to one person who needs it. Second most useful: leave a review.

  • Stop Confusing Options for Opportunities: A Practical Guide to Decision Making for ADHD Entrepreneurs

Ever find yourself saying yes to a new collaboration, tool, or project—then months later wondering how you got there? If you run a business (especially with an ADHD-ish™ brain), you’re not alone.

‍In this episode, I break down why our brains confuse options for opportunities, how dopamine clouds our judgment at the moment of the ask, and share a practical “screen door” filter to make better decisions going forward.

‍Dopamine is a talent scout, not a bookkeeper: That rush of excitement we feel with something new? It’s all about anticipation—not reality. The cost and maintenance of a new yes don’t hit until much later. The trick is to slow the yes.

‍Clever ways options pretend to be opportunities:

‍The Flattering Ask: feeling chosen and visible can feel like opportunity, but might be just an option that doesn’t fit your goals.

‍The Closing Door: artificial urgency and manufactured scarcity prey on impulsive decision-making.

‍The Adjacent Idea: our shiny new ideas often show up exactly when important work becomes tedious, tempting entrepreneurs to jump ship.

    ‍

Why is this so hard for ADHD brains?

‍Because dopamine is LOUD and it fires at anticipation, not the actual result. That new offer or collab invitation? It’s pure possibility—no fatigue, no disappointment, no downside at first. The evaluation part comes much later, usually after you’re already committed.

    Story Time

‍Diann once bought a high ticket course to “launch a high-ticket course,” and not only never opened it, but kept paying a monthly subscription for three (!) years (ADHD dopamine at work, folks—don’t feel bad, you’re not alone! 😂

‍Try this: The 4-Question "Screen Door" Filter

‍Before you say yes, ask yourself:

    1. 1. What existing goal does this serve?
    2. 2. What does it leverage that I’ve already built?
    3. ‍3. What are the terms of this commitment?
    4. ‍4. Does it survive 72 hours?

Nothing new gets a same-day yes. That 72-hour pause is where the real magic happens (and where many “opportunities” evaporate).

    ‍Start here:

    • *Make an idea parking lot for every new ask or idea.
    • *‍Practice the pause: “Let me check a couple things and get back to you.”
    • ‍*After 72 hours, run the 4-question test.

Some asks will quietly disappear. Others will become real, intentional decisions. Give it a try and notice how different your “yes” feels and the discomfort of waiting. That’s data.

    ‍

    Mantra for the week:

Every yes is not a purchase—it’s a subscription. Read the terms before you sign.

    ‍

But what about all the past decisions you’ve made that have made your business messy and chaotic?

  • A Skeptic's View of Using an AI Coach

Traditional business coaching falls short when late-night decision-making spirals hit, leaving many ADHD entrepreneurs feeling isolated and tired of generic productivity advice. As a stubbornly self-sufficient business owner, your urgent questions, pivot ideas, and friction points rarely line up with a pre-scheduled coaching call.

In this episode, Diann Wingert shares how her digital clone, Di AI, serves as a 24/7 thought partner to streamline your ADHD business strategy and lighten your daily cognitive load. Discover how on-demand support improves ADHD decision making, strengthens entrepreneur accountability, and optimizes ADHD business operations all without losing the essential human connection.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS & TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 — Introduction: AI Tools for the ADHD Entrepreneur

03:15 — Testing Digital Coaching and ADHD Decision Making

08:40 — Business Systems for ADHD Entrepreneurs

    The episode explores:

    • How Elizabeth structured the experiment (including the infamous decision matrix and her “wildly unrealistic expectations”)
    • Surprising (sometimes maddening) moments where AI reflected “stupid common sense” she’d never considered
    • What ghosting an AI tool taught her about the difference between digital and human accountability
    • The unexpected role of values alignment and motivation for us “rebels”
    • Cautionary tales about outsourcing too much trust—or too much of ourselves—to technology
    • Why critical thinking and intentionality are the only way these tools ever work for ADHD-ish brains

Elizabeth and I share both the wins and the “facepalm” moments, plus an actionable tip sheet for anyone skeptical (or hopeful) about using AI for habit-building and organization.

Her pro tip: Judge the tool by the quality of questions it asks you

    Don’t Miss:

Elizabeth’s three-question framework (adapted from Naturalistic Decision-Making) for deciding when and how to engage with AI tools—so you never cede too much power to an algorithm

If you’re tired of empty promises from productivity apps—or want a peek at what a scientifically-minded ADHD brain learns from kicking the tires on new tech—this episode is for you.

    Fun Fact

Elizabeth shared a story about her 15-year-old niece who, when asked where they should go for dinner, responded: “I don’t know. Let me ask Chat.” The future is here and apparently it’s hungry for chatbot input

    Your turn!

Make it practical: Use Di AI to help implement a tactic you picked up from the podcast, track specific goals, and follow up on progress.

Know your “why”: Consider the reason you are looking for accountability and fit AI into your schedule where you need a champion (hello, bookkeeping!)
