Last week, UK-based artist Yazmin Lacey released her debut album, Voice Notes. Lacey didn't even start pursuing music until she had graduated college and was living in her home city of Nottingham, when a series of open mics and demos quickly caught people's attention. After a successful 2020 EP, this full-length debut of neo-soul and R&B was inspired by short voice notes Lacey recorded on her phone during the early stages of making the album. Yazmin Lacey joins us from the UK for a Listening Party before she comes to New York to play at SoHo House on March 19.
In 1993, Steven Spielberg released two of his most famous films: "Jurassic Park" and "Schindler's List." Both films combined won a total of 10 Oscars at the 1994 Academy Awards. How he was able to pull it off? And what makes Spielberg a director who can successfully direct two completely different kinds of films to equal success? Joining us to discuss Spielberg's 1993 and his career as a whole, including his latest Best Picture nominee "The Fabelmans," is Bilge Ebiri, film critic for New York Magazine and Vulture. Plus, we'll take calls from listeners on their favorite Spielberg flicks.
For Feminist Fridays in honor of Women's History Month, we discuss the woman some consider to be the unofficial first female President: Edith Wilson. She helped run the country after her husband Woodrow Wilson had a stroke. Author Rebecca Boggs Roberts joins us to discuss her new biography of Wilson, Untold Power: The Fascinating Rise and Complex Legacy of First Lady Edith Wilson.
In the latest installment of the "Scream" franchise, four survivors of the Ghostface murders leave Woodsboro behind for a fresh start in New York City. "Scream VI" premiers in theaters on Friday, March 10.
A new adaptation of Chekhov's famous play, "The Seagull," by Thomas Bradshaw sets the action in the Hudson Valley, and turns the characters into a group of New York theater people struggling to live together without egos and rivalries getting in the way. Bradshaw and actors Ato Essandoh and Parker Posey join us to discuss "The Seagull/Woodstock, NY" running at the Pershing Square Signature Center through April 9th.
[REBROADCAST FROM October 4, 2022] In the latest film from writer and director Todd Field, Cate Blanchett stars as Lydia Tár, a pioneering and domineering conductor at the top of her game, an EGOT winner and the head of a major Berlin orchestra. But as allegations of misconduct follow her, Lydia struggles to keep a hold of her job, her power, her family, and perhaps even her sanity. Todd Field and Cate Blanchett join us discuss, "Tár."
Historian Dan Jones has been celebrated for his many books on British history, his podcast, This Is History, and his Netflix show, "Secrets of Great British Castles." But now he's tried his hand at fiction, with his debut novel, Essex Dogs. The story follows a group of English soldiers fighting together during the Hundred Years War. Jones joins us to discuss.
In continuing our Big Picture series celebrating the nominees who work behind the camera, we speak with Shirley Kurata, the Oscar nominated costume designer behind the memorable looks from Best Picture nominee, "Everything Everywhere All At Once."
