As a Brown Latina from the Bronx, the feeling of not belonging was so dense that Andrea Navedo could almost touch it. Yet instead of letting that sense of otherness break her, she used it as fuel to chase her goals; Andrea turned not being part of the mainstream into her strength. 

In today's episode, I'm thrilled to welcome the Award-winning Actress, Director, Keynote Speaker, and Author Andrea Navedo. The star from "Jane The Virgin" joins us to talk about being a Latina in New York, overcoming and healing from abuse, and the sense of otherness many Latinos experience living in America. 

Throughout this episode, you'll hear about Andrea's first encounter with domestic violence and how those experiences would mold her idea of adult relationships. Your tragedies can become your treasures.

When I was first diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, I thought that it was a tragedy that would have marked my life permanently. What I didn’t know was that that tragedy would have allowed me to help Amigas worldwide and write my first book, becoming a precious life treasure indeed. When something bad happens to you, don’t let it take control, but transform it into something you can use to change yourself and the world around you.

Although the Latino community in Fresno, California, plays a central role in the world's biggest economic force, agriculture, the economic disparities between them and other communities are massive. As Theresa Gonzales grew up, she became aware of this issue and realized she could either roll with it and see where life would take her or do something to break the cycle. She chose the latter.

Do you price your services or items correctly?

Giving yourself and your products the correct value is the foundation for a successful business. Theoretically, this is a simple thing to do. However, if you look around, many people devalue themselves and their products, choosing to lower prices with the open to attract clients. The construction industry is probably the mecca of the "jobs that can't be done by women," which is a massive part of the conversation about gender equality. However, feminine presence in the trades has increased recently due to society's rejection of outdated biases and tech evolution.

In this episode, I'm joined by a true legacy builder, Louis "LJ" Fisher III. He is the Vice President of Operations at Cell-Crete Corporation, a third-generation family-owned construction business. Louis was lucky enough to work with his father and his grandfather, Cell-Crete's founder. Putting together the best of the two worlds, Louis added his fresh and renewed energy to the company, focusing on safety, implementing new technology, and using diversity and inclusion to bring new perspectives and a variety of skill sets.

Throughout our conversation, Louis shares his thoughts on how it is to run a third-generation family business, the changes that took part in the company and the construction industry throughout the years, and the labor shortage. Did you know that Latinas won't achieve equal pay until 2197 at the current rate of change?

This is not science fiction. This is a real finding from a scientific report by Latina & Power, a global network created to inspire, motivate and enable Latinas to succeed as influential leaders and advocates. According to this report, despite Latina being an economic powerhouse with over 12.9 million women in the workforce, they still earn only 55 cents on the dollar relative to white non-Latino men. These findings tell us there is still much work to do for Latinas to achieve the recognition they deserve. 

To further elevate the Latina community, Latinas & Power developed a new leadership platform called The Latinas in Leadership Institute, where Latinas can continue to build skills, identify growth opportunities, tap their unique passions, and make valuable contributions to their organizations, businesses, and communities.

They believe it is the price they pay for leaving their beloved country, family, and friends behind. That belief puts much pressure on their kids, who must at least become lawyers, doctors, or engineers to make their parents' sacrifice worth it. But what happens when that child chooses a different path?

Speaking up for ourselves and the causes we love is something we all need to face in life. However, many people avoid doing it because of the feeling of stress and anxiety that can come with it. How can we overcome the fear of speaking up while making our voices heard simultaneously? One of the best ways to accomplish this is through practice. You can start with something small in your everyday life. When you want to speak up for something, push yourself out of your comfort zone. Take a deep breath and tell yourself you are strong and capable and that your voice matter. Remember, sometimes in life, we must push ourselves out of our comfort zones and accept uncomfortable feelings to make great things happen.
