For over 25 years Sharon Lebell’s internationally bestselling book, The Art of Living: The Classic Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness, has inspired philosophy lovers and the modern Stoicism movement. A contemporary interpretation of the ancient sage Epictetus’ teachings, it is a perennial classic that is a cherished spiritual companion and daily guide for readers from every walk of life.
Sharon is a strong proponent of expressing philosophy in accessible language so anyone can apply it to better their own lives and be invited to delve further into philosophical inquiry. The imperative to use our lives to improve the lives of others and the importance of beauty and engagement with art, music, and design are central to her message of what makes the best possible life.
Since Sharon Lebell was a child, she was obsessed with the questions “how do we each live the best possible life and what does that mean?” She has thus spent her adult life writing and speaking about philosophy, spirituality, meditation, Buddhism, Judaism, ethics, feminism, and related topics. She is also the author of Naming Ourselves, Naming Our Children and co-author with Brother David Steindl-Rast of The Music of Silence.

In this week's Feel Good Friday episode, Steve shares the inspirational story from 1909 of an Irish-American hero named Patrick Cadagin, who gave his life to save a young woman.
Cadagin, who was living in Springfield Illinois, was a watchman at a railroad crossing when a woman named Pearl Bunes was approaching in her horse and buggy. The horse panicked at the roar of an approaching locomotive and bolted towards the tracks. Cadagin took action and grabbed the horse by the reigns, only to be thrown upon the tracks and killed by the train.
He's been gone 113 years, but the story of his legendary heroism lives on.

This week, Steve decided to try and inject a little humor into your Friday (or whatever day it is that you happen to be listening to this), and borrow again from his friend Brad Aronson’s blog. Brad is best known for writing the inspiring bestselling book Humankind: Changing the World One Small Act at a Time (all proceeds go to nonprofit Big Brothers Big Sisters).
In this episode Steve reads excerpts from Brad's blog detailing actual exchanges taken by court reporters between lawyers and witnesses on the stand, taken from a book called Disorder in the Court: Great Fractured Moments in Courtroom History.

In honor of Mothers around the world, this week we are releasing an Encore Presentation of our interview from 6 months ago with Every Mother Counts (EMC) founder Christy Turlington Burns. Christy's work in maternal health began after experiencing a childbirth related complication in 2003—an experience that would later inspire her to direct and produce the documentary feature film, No Woman, No Cry, about the challenges women face throughout pregnancy and childbirth around the world. Under Christy’s leadership, Every Mother Counts has invested nearly $21 million in programs in Africa, Central America and Caribbean, South Asia and the United States focused on making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere.
Before founding Every Mother Counts, Christy received international acclaim as a model representing the world’s biggest fashion and beauty brands. She was the Founder of Nuala, a yoga lifestyle brand in partnership with Puma, co-founder of Sundari, a skincare based on the principals of Ayurveda, and author of the bestselling book, Living Yoga: Creating a Life Practice.
Christy has been featured on thousands of magazine covers, one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People, and among Glamour Magazine’s 2013 Women of the Year. In March 2016, EMC was recognized as one of Fast Company magazine’s Top 10 Most Innovative Not-For-Profit Companies.
In this episode, we chat with Christy about her childhood growing up in Northern California, a middle child raised by an Airline Pilot father and flight attendant mother from El Salvador. She talks openly about her experience on that fateful day that changed the course of her life forever. We chat about the problems in maternal healthcare worldwide and here in the US, where a woman is twice as likely to die in childbirth now as her mother was decades ago. We discuss the disturbing disparities in mortality rates in childbirth between women of color and white women, and why that is, as well as the amazing work that Every Mother Counts is doing in order to bring about change around the world.

For this Feel Good Friday episode, we're bringing you 23 stories to inspire you to overcome and even embrace your failures, and use them as fuel to pursue your dreams.
Whether it's Steven Spielberg, Colonel Sanders, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Walt Disney, or 15 year-old Jack Andraka who created a diagnostic test for Pancreatic Cancer that was better than the tests developed by scientists, research labs and billion dollar pharmaceutical companies, all of these success stories had one thing in common. They all had huge failures along the way, but never gave up!
Special thanks to Brad Aronson for his article Famous Failures: 23 Stories to Inspire You to Succeed, that is featured in this episode.
