MELISSA ETHERIDGE is my guest this week. Yes, THE Melissa Etheridge.

She’s touring once again, kicking off in Perth in May, then heading east stopping all stations, Adelaide, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Sydney (which is already sold out). She’s bringing some family with her as you’re about to hear she is very very excited about it.

If this is your first time hearing about this remarkable woman, let me bring you up to speed. Melissa Etheridge is a Grammy winning, Oscar winning singer/songwriter superstar. For over 30 years her distinctive voice has told stories of love, passion and heartache.

She’s publicly lived through challenges that most people experience in private - her journey of coming out, a cancer diagnosis, hair loss from the chemo, and recently the absolutely tragic loss of her son Beckett who passed away from an opioid overdose at just 21.

Yeah, heads up - we talk about that, and I end up crying in this chat.

Melissa, however, has used her grief to explore ways of treating addiction by supporting world-first research into the use of plant medicines previously associated with sacred ceremony and how they might be able to save lives so affected by addiction.

Today we’re talking to SHARON CALLISTER - she’s the CEO of Mission Australia.

Sharon is one of these rare humans that’s just born to help. Can’t stop her, won’t stop her. Among the things she’s focusing on - is addressing the grim challenge of rising homelessness among women in Australia.

You might be confronted by some of the misconceptions about homelessness in Australia. Sharon shares some pretty intense stories of people she’s worked with who have experienced homelessness and the challenges they face.

Helping an individual is important, however it’s treating a symptom not a cause, so Sharon has a lot to say about the need for investment in social and affordable housing and the power of early intervention.

We do talk about domestic and family violence and the role of education in changing attitudes and behaviours.

I know it sounds grim - but I promise you this is a conversation full of hope. Enjoy this chat with Sharon Callister.

Track 3: Song that was playing around your first kiss

Track 4: Song that was playing when you lost your virginity

Track 5: The song you played all schoolies

Track 6: Song that arrived with your first non-school friend as an adult

Track 7: Song from the first funeral of a friend you went to

Track 8: Song your first real serious parenter got you into

Track 9: Song of your first big breakup

Track 10: The Song of redemption

Track 11: Song of your first big adventure

Track 12: Song from the courtship of your current partner

Track 13: Your Wedding song

Track 14: Song playing when first child was born

Track 15: Song you pretend not to like when you’re driving kids to sport

Track 16: Song that helps you lift heavy at the gym

Use this playlist when you’re stuck in an emotional situation and are at risk of making a poor choice. It will instantly transport you through time to a completely different emotional state, and then when you return to now you can deal with whatever is bothering you with some better perspective, possibly even a bit breathless from dancing.

Jess Urlichs is on the show today, she’s an author and a poet, who lives in New Zealand with her husband and their three kids. She has written a variety of children’s books, to help babies and young children navigate their emotions in their early years.

Jess is very successful, she’s sold hundreds of thousands of copies of her books all around the world, her most popular book being From One Mum to Another. Her latest book "Beautiful Chaos" is available now for pre-order and to purchase March 5th.

‌We cover a lot in this chat - the challenges and joys of parenthood, the impact of birth stories on expectant mothers, the profound transformation that occurs when becoming a parent and the journey of seeking help for postpartum mental health. We cover the importance of supporting children with mental health issues and she has some advice to parents on how to navigate challenges like that, and she generously shares her strategies for staying organized as a parent while managing her OCD.
