Let’s go to 2014 to revisit my conversation with my first ever internet friend Camilla Wright. Camilla is the founder an editor of the internet’s longest-running, deepest-digging gossipmongers, Popbitch which has been in action since late 1999. Popbitch is easily, if not the very first internet pop culture gossip sites or gossip newsletters which set the standard of internet reporting from celebrity culture to pop culture in the new millennium. 

Camilla is a remarkable woman who left a career in serious political journalism covering Eastern Europe as it emerged from communism in the late 90s to start a weekly email about pop stars behaving badly.

My guest today was the catalyst for fundamentally changing how consent education works in Australia.

In 2021, Chanel Contos posted on Instagram: “Have you or a close friend been sexually assaulted by someone who went to an all-boys school in Sydney?”

Within 24 hours, 204 people had responded “yes” to the question, and then she had her first ever live TV interview 72 hours later. Over that weekend her friend started a website for Chanel, where she collected 6000 testimonies during the first three weeks. She started a petition demanding consent classes and 45,000 signatures later and exactly a year from the date she first posted on Instagram – after a lot of meetings and phone calls – the nine education ministers in Australia unanimously agreed and then publicly announced that they would mandate consent education.

Chanel Contos is a force of nature. A fierce advocate for consent education and the brilliant brain behind the Teach Us Consent campaign. She's been instrumental in raising awareness about sexual assault and consent in Australia.

Today we discuss the challenges of navigating relationships in the dating app era and explore the disturbing influence of pornography on our understanding of consent. Chanel highlights the need to extend empathy beyond our immediate circles, teaching both young men and women how they can prioritize their own desires – but most importantly, saying no when it matters most.

Chanel has some valuable lessons to impart – not just about preventing sexual violence but also around creating a culture of respect and understanding. She strongly believes that showing young men that healthy, consensual relationships are something they should aspire to can ultimately help change the world.

When you think of an someone who’s addicted to methamphetamines, where their life is, where they live, what their job is, what their relationship with their family is like, what it the image that comes to your mind?

I’ll bet that picture isn’t a successful middle-aged man, with a beautiful home near the beach, a man who is a father of three daughters. I’ll also bet that you didn’t picture Australian surfing legend Tom Carroll. But at one point, that’s exactly what Tom’s life had become.

In the world of professional surfing, Tom Carroll is a legend. Through the 80s and 90s, he dominated professional surfing, becoming the first surfer to sign a multi-million dollar contract. In 1983 and 1984 he twice achieved the pinnacle of his sport when he became back to back world champion. But it’s what Tom has achieved out of the water which is possibly even more incredible.

In today’s episode he talks about how he found him self sliding down the slippery slope of addiction, how that addiction began to take everything that he loved away from him, had him trapped in a cycle of drug abuse that was heading towards a very grim end. But Tom knew he needed help, and thankfully he was able to get that help. And it was at South Pacific Private that Tom first got help.

I’m no stranger to talking about recovery from drugs and alcohol - it’s a part of my story and a huge reason why I started this show. Because I didn’t know that not drinking and using was an option. I wanted to have conversations out there which could demonstrate that there was an alternative and that help was available if you needed it.

Belinda Chapple was a member of the massive Australian girl group Bardot.

Bardot formed in 1999 on the reality TV series Popstars on Channel 7. Popstars filmed the whole process, from auditioning thousands of ladies, down to the top 25 and then eventually the top five that formed Bardot. From there they moved into a house together and we watched their every moment for the first three months of Bardot.

‌Bardot released two albums, were nominated for three ARIA awards and had two national tours, before their abrupt end in 2002. The band originally consisted of Belinda Chapple, Sophie Monk, Sally Polihronas, Katie Underwood and Tiffany Wood. Katie left in early 2001 to pursue musical theatre roles, then a year later, an official statement was released to say “Bardot confirm their mutual decision to end the group's career.”‌

Wildly I was there for the band’s final ever performance on the Channel V stage - the 2nd of May in 2002. Which I didn’t actually recall until getting ready for this interview, I was still drinking at the time and dealing with a lot of PTSD shit. It makes sense I don’t remember it. But when I watched it, you see all four women in tears, marking the end of a once close band.

Belinda has released a book to tell us what really happened.

‌The end of the band was not mutual and despite the band reportedly earning up to 26 million in its first 12 months what the ladies actually got paid was a long way from that. But it’s not all about money. It’s about friendship, trust, and in some ways - betrayal.‌

Belinda Chapple is a brilliant human, and her story is one I know you’ll get a lot out of.
