I met today’s guest online in an autism group, we are both in, a few months ago.  She posted this incredible video she had made of herself and it was so beautiful and really spoke to me.  I immediately reached out and we started talking.  Sarah Ferguson has become one of my best friends and we are so much alike that we are constantly laughing at our similarities.  We are both ASD, ADHD and dyslexic.  So you can imagine our fast conversations that change subjects and gears at lightning speed and are infused with incredible graphics, gifs, memes and other visuals.  Sarah is the light in my day and the laugh that makes my side hurt.  I can’t wait for you to meet her today and hear about her autism journey and a bit about being a mom on the spectrum.

Today’s interview is not to be missed.  My friend, Julia, who wasn’t diagnosed until she was 40, has some incredible insights to share today.  She was awarded the MBE in the UK for her innovation in developing new methods of teaching and instruction specifically for autistics learning to drive a car.  She is a driving instructor, autism coach, and has more degrees and certificates than I can count.  She completed her Master’s and her PhD AT THE SAME TIME!  Her insights into what we need to know and how to prepare for a diagnosis as an adult will make you stop and think.  This conversation will touch you as she shares her experiences of helping other autistics have a voice in the world and what she is doing now to continue to help every day.  You can find Julia on Facebook at: Julia Pistrucci Malkin-Ren.

Hi, I am Carole Jean Whittington and I am The Socially Intelligent Autistic or Social AUtie. I haven't always been Socially Intelligent, but since finding out at the age of 39 that I am Autistic I have put in thousands of hours of study into the fields of Social Psychology, Social Neuroscience, Neurobiology and Vision Science to try and better understand my neurodiverse brain.  I have found some incredible information and am here to share it with you so that you too can be a Socially Intelligent Autistic. This amazing new field of study called Social Neuroscience, which began in 2006, studies the way the brain functions during social interaction by using functional MRI. Now we can see which parts of the brain are lighting up and being engaged during certain functions and behaviors. To an autistic person like me that information is pure gold! 

Why? Because I have always known that my brain must not be operating like other people's because I struggled for years to try and figure out why someone did something or said something and I would get it sometimes and other times it just never made sense to me. Now, with the advancement of science and the exploration of how our brains both neurodiverse and neurotypical work we can see the differences and better understand why someone does and says something. To me this is gold, this knowledge is a treasure worth possessing and sharing with other autistic people. 

There is some incredible science out there showing us not only how our brains work as Autistics, but how the brains of Neurotypicals work so that we can better understand not just ourselves but the other person. We are amazing and our brains are incredible.   Each week we will discuss a study that tells us more about how the brain functions socially, what research is going on, how it applies to Autistics, how it applies to Neurotypicals and some actionable tips to test out in your own life because this isn't all about theory this is about practice. I am not about changing who we are or masking our true selves, because we are incredible just the way we are, this is about understanding how our brains work as autistics and how we can better understand the other people in our world and most importantly, it is about teaching others so that they can better understand us.
