Cabin Culture

What do Fish farm ponds, stolen money, and custom scents all have in common? Well theyre all part the story of Clapper Hollow Homes retreats. Host, Mom, and weekend warrior Orphy joins Janice to cover all the details that make a magical experience for their guests. They talk about what it’s like to go from no cabin it all to hosting 3 with a 4th on the way in the span of 3 short years, and some of the lessons in finding reliable contractors and accidental 1 star reviews.

Tiffany and her family enjoy all the outdoor activities. Trips to national parks have been a staple of their vacation and family bonding for quite some time. This takes a bit more planning when you're looking for accommodations that are not only wheelchair accessible but universally functional. So, after some research she began dreaming up her families own escape in rural NH, designed thoughtfully in ways that supports all her sons needs and anyone else who may be looking for an adventure, but who also has found the same struggle booking a place that allows them to spend more of their trip enjoying their time together and less solving accessibility challenges . On this episode Tiffany shares with us what her build process has been like so far and some simple modifications you might be able to make to you're STR that creates a more more enjoyable experience for all.

If you're into cabins at all you're most likely familiar with one of the most popular cabin pages on instagram, @TheCabinChronicles. What you may be less familiar with is the man behind the page, JJ Eggers. This is because from the very beginning of this endeavor it has always been about the cabin, the photographers that shoot them, and the people the enjoy getting lost in them. JJ shares how all of this started for him, almost literally "losing" out on the opportunity to publish his book, and what it's like to have something you've put so much time, energy and love into held hostage by scammers.

Steve Durand joins us again this week on the podcast, for an update on current events in Quebec as it relates to short term rentals and AirBNB regulations. Two weeks ago in Montreal there was an apartment fire that killed seven, and unfortunately was home to several AirBNB’s. While the Quebec province has required STR registration for some time, it wasn’t enforced (by them or AirBNB) until now, when outside pressure has forced them to address this. AirBNB has now shut down all short term rentals not registered (and displaying their registration number on their listing) which has put a lot of hosts in tough situations. We talk about how this impacted Steve specifically, as well as how all STR hosts can use this as a lesson to help refine their business models and backup plans.

Today we're joined by Keryn  owner of Kulhaus Cabin, an A-frame  in South Lake Tahoe California. She spent her childhood camping in Tahoe with her family and her memories of time spent outside and the smell pine drew her back to the area in hopes of sharing those experiences with her son. The affordability of the area in 2018 in comparison to the city made the dream a possibility and while searching listings a quirky Aframe with a tree in front called out to Keryn. With background in fashion design she set out slowly transforming the A-frame inside and out into something she could share with anyone looking for an escape. She expands on all that took as a single Mom and some of the scary moments the last couple years with the arrival of the pandemic and California wild fires.

On this episode we have Devon Loerop, an Engineer by weekday and one man building, designing, media machine by weekend. After college in the midwest he packed up his life and headed for the mountains on the West coast. With a passion for film and photography Devon worked at developing a media business and stashed away that money with plans to invest in something bigger. After finding some inspiration on social media he figured his background in welding and engineering we’re a great fit to take on a container home project. Understanding the power of social media, he started sharing his story and project from the very beginning. 775k followers took notice and 2 years later after ups and downs, hurdles and plenty of dollars he’s finally able to open the doors to share his project “The Bin” with those looking for a PNW escape. He shares with us some of his high and low moments throughout the project, a ton of insight on the value of The Bin’s social following and how he achieved it, and his future projects that may or may not have a major tv network involved! Check out what he’s got going on below!

Spenser joins us from his cozy makeshift porch studio complete with wood fireplace (not stove....Janice..) to share with us the story behind their creek side cottage build in the blue ridge mountains of Georgia. Their very first step in the realization of this dream was met with resistance when their realtor told them "you're never going to find what you're looking for." After passing on her advice, they quickly found their slice of heaven and began planning how to turn the 480sf "murder shack" into the whimsical forest escape they could share with family, friends and anyone looking for
space and time to reconnect with their partner. From design and build to hosting Spenser's has tons of great insight and information to share.

Steve Durand and his beautiful Malamute, Inuk join us this week on the podcast. 7 years ago, after winding down a career in music production, he bought 465 acres an hour outside Ottawa in the Canadian wilderness with goals to: live a more sustainable life, learn how to survive independently, and share his experience while protecting the land. In that time he's established himself a homestead and built three cabins which he now rents to those looking for an unforgettable immersive experience in nature. Steve maintains all the trails and cabins on the property himself while still some how finding the time to capture it all to share with everyone. Our usual one hour wasn't nearly enough time to dive into all the details of Steve and his land so we can't wait to have him back on to pick up where we left off. One of our favorite episodes so far, enjoy!

Sacha Roy, a Canadian film maker who traveled  the world filming with Red Bull, decided he wanted a change of pace in his life. He began dreaming up an off grid escape for himself when he found a piece of land tucked away in the woods overlooking the Canadian wilderness. With a curious mindest (and some youtube tutorials) Sacha designed and built himself a simple but elegant “sugar shack” style cabin, that would eventually be featured in dwell. His youtube channel mixes beautiful scenery with different stages of the cabins development and his process for installing things like solar, rain water collection, and heating. We ran out of time with some great conversation but hope to have Sacha back again in the future to dive deeper into the details of all his off grid systems.
