God was doing what He was doing in and through the church of Thessalonica because of the emphasis the Thessalonians were putting on God’s Word. The power has always been, always will, always going to be found in the Word. There is unity in the Word of God. If we open our hearts and minds, the power of God will bring salvation and perform a work in all of us. There’s power in the Word of God not just for salvation but because it performs a work in the lives of those who believe. Are we letting God’s Word perform a work in us? The Word of God brings us together. The Word of God brings unity. The Word of God aligns hearts so that we can walk through life’s struggles together. Who were your childhood heroes? Why would they be considered your heroes? It wasn't just what they did but it was why they did it. In 1 Thessalonians 2:9-12, Paul is reminding the Thessalonians what they have done so that they would walk in a manner worthy of God. Everything Paul is doing in Thessalonica is so that the Thessalonians would walk in a manner worthy of God. Paul is saying he is coming alongside the Thessalonians to walk in the journey together. We are to walk alongside one another, pick each other up when they fall, and correct when we see someone going the wrong way. That’s accountability. Make yourselves available and let God do the rest. In 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8, we see Paul is speaking as a defendant. He is defending himself and their ministry because the people are questioning his motives. Paul points to his suffering to bring validity to his message. As we look back on Acts 16 and 17, we that these men turned the world upside down by sharing the gospel. Can the same be said of us as Christians? It starts here in your world. Change your world with the gospel of Jesus Christ on your lips and in your life. To shrink back from declaring this Good News, defies the plan that God has placed on your life. Are you thinking about the legacy and the purpose you are leaving? When you get to the end of your life, what will be the difference that you make? Only what is done for Jesus will last. The gospel is at the center of everything we do here. We have been entrusted with it. We don’t need to wait any longer to start sharing. In 1 Thessalonians 1, Paul continues to thank the Thessalonians for be imitators of him and, ultimately, of Christ. The Thessalonians are now living out the faith and sharing the gospel. The Thessalonians were reproducing the gospel cycle. Paul was reproducing the gospel cycle himself. Look at the example of Paul who used to be Saul. Like Saul, you may have no desire to change but God has different plans and He will trump your plans. Paul was content living the way he was living as Saul BUT WHEN GOD showed up it changed everything. Can you remember those BUT WHEN GOD moments? What cycle are you stuck in that needs to be stopped? 1 Thessalonians is about a man ministering to a young group of believers who are starting to face persecution. Paul is telling this young group of believers, “Quit looking at your circumstances and be reminded that Jesus is coming.” Our hope is not in this world. Our hope and joy that keeps us moving forward is found in Jesus. God has chosen you. He wants to use you. The Creator of the Universe has placed us in places to use us to influence those around us. His choice was you. Quit running and trust in the finished work of Christ. Let the gospel change your life. Let the gospel transform who you are. When we see a construction job site, everything that's on the job site is going to be used, has a role, and has been purchased by the owner. This is similar to us as Christians. God has purchased you through the blood of His Son, Jesus, and He has placed you on the job site to be used. You have a position, a job, and a responsibility as a follower of Christ. God came and rescued you out of the darkness so that He could use you to build His Kingdom. You have so much value that He sent His Son to die for you. God didn’t save us for us to just rot on the job site. He saved us to use us to build up the Kingdom, but there is a preparation process. God wants to cut away what’s not fit to use not because He’s mad at you but because He loves you. Do you want to be used? In Exodus, we see Moses having to grow smaller by him leading a group of people to pray and him having Joshua lead an army to fight. Both Moses and Joshua were needed to lead smaller groups and to claim victory. As a follower of Christ, we are all leading something. In leading, there will be days that we are exhausted. We see that even Moses became exhausted. However, we see that Moses was not alone and neither are we. You don’t have the strength to do this on your own. We weren’t meant to do this alone. In our journey of following Christ, there are going to be days we are going to need help. We have to be willing to let people help. Are you letting God’s people help you and let people walk with you on this journey? In Christ, victory always follows faithfulness. This victory was provided because they grew smaller. At CMC, you hear us say, "You belong," and talking about belonging. As we biblically unpack this statement and why it's important to us, we see that this statement is more than a marketing tool but that it's a burden and prayer that we have for you. God designed each of us to have a desire to belong to something. Although belongingness in the world we live in has many boundaries and limits, belongingness in the Kingdom of God has no limits because of the finished work of Jesus Christ. When we belong to the Father, it doesn’t stop there because we also belong to the Church. By God’s design, the local church has been established so that we can have a place to call home. We can’t do this without each other and God; it’s the way we are designed. There are now less than 6% of churches in America that are growing. People have become stagnant and disengaged in the church. At this church, we are going to fight for the Church. In looking at the parable of the lost sheep that Jesus told, we see the parallel between sheep and us. There’s a reason a sheep ends up leaving a flock and a lot of times it is because they are internally sick. The church is the gathering of people. If God’s desire is for the church to be together, then the enemy’s desire for the church to be separated. There is power in togetherness. When is the last time we have invited someone to church? How many people are simply waiting on an invitation? Be willing to step outside of the comfort of the 99 to go after the ones who have gone astray.
