Communication is the single most important component of a relationship. It is at the heart of all the highs, the lows, the fights, the successes, the tough decisions, and the easy ones too. A relationship with strong, open communication is, more often than not, a healthy one.
Over the course of hosting our show, we’ve had the privilege to speak with many of our listeners who’ve reached out for advice or to simply share their stories. And at the core of nearly every relationship problem we’ve encountered through this experience (including in our own relationship), is a failure of or a breakdown in communication. Communication is the first step in working through any relationship issue, from small aggravations to big life decisions. Improving communication is critical in building a thriving relationship.
This week we work through 7 rules or tips on how to improve communication. We focus on how to listen to each other, genuinely hear your partner out, how to empathize with and understand their perspective, how to avoid offending them and how to avoid escalating disagreements to heated conflict. Our research derives from a wonderful book, ‘After the Honeymoon: How Conflict Can Improve Your Relationship’ by Daniel B. Wile that we encourage all of our listeners to read.
“To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.” - Tony Robbins
