Creating Opportunity: Why Results are More Important than Intent in Supplier Diversity

Listen Later

Of all the things minority-owned business might want, getting on the radar screen of a large enterprise is pretty near the top of the list. And yet, given the realities of modern business, without a little support from specialized organizations, that opportunity might never come to pass.

In this episode of the #SupplyChainCity series, which features big business leaders based in Supply Chain Now’s home city of Atlanta, we hear two leaders speaking about the efforts being made to help minority-owned businesses connect with large companies who appreciate the value they bring. Stacey Key is the President and CEO of the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council (GMSDC), and George Richter is the Senior Vice President of Supply Chain Management at Cox Communications. Cox Communications was one of the founding members of the GMSDC in 1976 and remains a strong supporter of the diversity movement to this day.

To better understand the progress that has been made over the last 45 years and the work that remains to be done, Co-hosts Scott Luton and Ben Harris, Director of Supply Chain Ecosystem Expansion for the Metro Atlanta Chamber, interview Stacey and George about:

• What it means to be a small and/or diversity owned business, and why certifications play an important part in the diversity movement

• Why accountability is just as important as intent in supplier diversity

• The steps that large corporations need to take today to have the desired economic impact in communities of color
