  • Eggs Or Mushrooms? The Mystery Of A Carlingford Garden
Listener Erin in Carlingford made an interesting discovery while out in her garden. She found what looked like white speckled eggs on the ground, under a piece of bark.
    [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/07/21115109/Erin_Eggs_2107.mp3"][/audio]
So Erin did the most logical thing and called in nature experts Dermot and Dave.
Unsurprisingly, we didn't have a clue.
Thankfully with the help of Today FM listeners and TCD Zoologist, Collie Ennis, we were able to identify something called stinkhorn fungus. Yep, really.
Catch Collie's explanation of what it is and what to do if you have it by clicking play above.

  • How You Can Own A Piece Of Television History
We all went gung ho on the 'oul home improvements during lockdown whether that was painting the gaff, doing up the garden or treating ourselves to some new furniture.
    [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/07/21101953/GOTAuction_2107.mp3"][/audio]
But what about owning the ULTIMATE talking point for next time you can have people over, a piece of television history.
Laois man Sean Eacrett is Ireland's auctioneer to Hollywood having previously auctioned props from the likes of 'Penny Dreadful', 'Into the Badlands' and worked with clients like MGM, Showtime and AMC.
His upcoming auction is one for fans of Game of Thrones or Vikings!
Not only do you have the chance to buy this set of tall metal candelabras from the set of GOT...
But there's over 120 lots from Vikings including Aslaug’s Boat Chair and King Ivor's throne.
Speaking to Dermot and Dave, Seán explained how he gets the pieces and who tends to buy them!  The auction takes place on Monday and the full selection is available to view here.

  • What's Your Favourite Bit Of A Song?
Our Dermot has had a bit of a revelation.
    [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/07/20142343/Dermot_OneSweetDay_2007.mp3"][/audio]
Usually firmly Team Cracker, he recently discovered 'One Sweet Day' by Boys II Men and Mariah Carey. Full.blown.Edam.
But it's not just the song, he's obsessed with. It's one particular moment.
Which got us thinking of our favourite moment from songs, and Dermot and Dave listeners have so many deadly examples. Whether it's Celine's 'NO NO NO NO' in Think Twice or Mr Grohl's incredible intro to Best of You, everyone has a 'bit' of a song that makes them turn it up louder than the rest.
You can hear Dermot's explanation by clicking play above.

    [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/07/20133347/ZakMoradi_2007.mp3"][/audio]

  • Have The Irish Descended On Holiday Resorts?
Back in May, we met Brenda Cassidy from Paddy's Irish Bar in Albufeira in Portugal as they looked forward to the potential that Irish people might get to visit across the summer.

Dermot and Dave caught up with Brenda to see how many of those have found their way to Albufeira, and to see what the craic is with restrictions in the area.

  • Payment For Marriage? How Dowry Remains Popular
It's something that most people on this side of the world have likely only encountered on television, film or in books but for millions of people in places like India and across Southeast Asia and Africa, Dowry is a fundamental part of marriage.
    [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/07/19134746/Dowry_1907.mp3"][/audio]
Dowry is a transfer of wealth, in some form, from the household of the bride to the groom, the payments are large, often more than a year of earnings.
Despite the fact that they were outlawed in India in 1961, dowry payments still feature in around 80% of marriages.
It's a complex tradition, fraught with concerns of women's welfare even from birth but despite legal bans and an increase of education, it's still very much a part of millions of people's culture.
Speaking to Dermot and Dave, Gaurav Chiplunkar from the University of Virginia and co-author of 'Marriage Markets and the Rise of Dowry in India', explained how dowry works, the concerns around it and how it could change in the future.
