Growing up in North Queensland in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I can’t say I heard or cared too much about Rugby Union. Even their players I had no interest in, unless it was talking about a league player heading into union.
But in 2017, I heard a story about a young man by the name of David Pocock who was going to take a year off to focus on his studies. As a former athlete, I couldn’t believe an athlete at the top of their game could have the confidence to take a year out to focus on their studies. It was totally a shock and totally inspiring to me. Something I wish I could have had the confidence to do during my career.
From then on, I kept an eye on what David was up to, whether it was to do with the stance he was taking with same sex marriage or his conservation work, I admired the things he stood for and his ability to articulate it when athlete’s are barely allowed to comment on sport.
This conversation was engaging and inspiring and if you don’t feel like changing the world after this chat, then I might argue that you don’t have a pulse!
