Cardiometabolic health refers to the cluster of risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugars, and abdominal adiposity that are predictive of heart disease and diabetes.
In her research, Rebecca looked at the impact of overall dietary patterns, not just single nutrients, on cardiometabolic and frailty outcomes.
For individuals with prediabetes or high blood sugar, Rebecca recommends a carbohydrate-controlled approach, aiming for 30-45g of carbs per meal and 0-30g for snacks.
Rebecca emphasizes the importance of considering both the amount and type of carbohydrates, favoring low glycemic index and whole grain options over refined and high glycemic foods.
Healthy dietary patterns like the Mediterranean, DASH, and Nordic diets are recommended for cardiometabolic health as they are low in saturated fat, sodium, and high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and fish.
Limiting intake of discretionary, highly processed foods high in fat, salt, and sugar is also an important part of these heart-healthy dietary approaches.
Rebecca plans to discuss the role of protein and fat, particularly in relation to frailty, in a future interview.
