In this episode, I share a conversation I had with a sharp, high-potential business colleague who kept getting stuck in the weeds. His reasoning? "I'm just not good at that, so I should delegate it." On the surface, that sounds like self-awareness—but I told him straight up, that's low-level thinking. Leadership isn't about avoiding what you're bad at; it's about making decisions through the lens of impact, not comfort. You don't delegate because you're bad at something—you delegate because it's not the highest and best use of your energy.
I break down the elite way to approach this: as a leader, you need to be competent in every area—operations, hiring, messaging, vision, cash flow, culture, conflict—because you're responsible for all of it. That doesn't mean you do everything yourself; it means you develop enough proficiency to make strategic calls and then focus on the levers that truly move the needle in revenue, leadership, and legacy. The mindset shift is going from "I'm not good at that" to "I could be good at that, but it's not where I'm most valuable."
If you want to win at a high level, stop asking what you're naturally good at and start asking what matters most to your business. Then do that with excellence, every single day. This episode is about moving beyond comfort, avoiding the escape hatch of "I'm not good at that," and leading with clarity about when to step in and when to step back. That's how you build something great, that's how you lead, and that's how you win.
Welcome to The Spinoso Podcast hosted by CEO, doctor, comic book geek, and car guy, Alex Spinoso. I help people and companies grow - especially in the medical business. While my experience and expertise is in scaling all types of medical businesses to 7, 8, 9-figures or more, I can be a mentor to anyone who wants to take ownership of their lives, become a better leader at home and at work, and overcome any obstacle that stands in their way.
