This is StRest! Kerstin Lindquist sits down with psychiatrist, author, and speaker Dr. Curt Thompson to break down why shame and anxiety don’t get healed by “downloading” more information. Dr. Thompson explains that shame is felt in the body—chest, face, nervous system—and it spins stories about what others think of you. So instead of lecturing yourself out of it, he invites a different pathway: presence.
Staying in the room with a safe person, checking the story shame is writing, and letting love be close enough to change you. They connect interpersonal neurobiology with a Christian vision of spiritual formation, why modern life trains us to live like machines, and why Jesus’ invitation is not “try harder” but “come closer.” Finally, Dr. Thompson lays out what practice looks like: becoming deeply known in community, naming the parts of you that feel unlovable, and building rhythms that re-train attention—scripture, solitude, and embodied habits that grow peace.
