Welcome to Protecting Your Nest with Dr. Tony Hampton. Dr. Victoria Smoter is the Lead Clinical Psychologist at Advocate Trauma Recovery Center where she has been working for over 20 years. She was the Chief Psychology Resident during her residency and, prior to that, she did her Adult Behavioral Health Doctoral Internship with Primary Care Psychology Associates. She attended the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and has her BA in Clinical Psychology from Washington College.
In this discussion, Drs. Tony and Victoria talk about the clinical definition of trauma, what types of experiences qualify as trauma according to this definition, how to recognize the presence of trauma in the psyche of someone you know, post-traumatic stress disorder, the process of effectively building trust with a patient, the biology of trauma, the effect of chronic stress on the brain, how an individual's stress and trauma manifest externally in society, how the world views and interacts with people suffering from trauma, and how to help a person walk through their trauma in a healthy way.
Additionally, Victoria shares a bit about how little traumas accumulating over time can negatively effect us and how the practice of gratitude can help to mitigate these effects.
