TW: discussion of substance abuse, childhood trauma, and prison
Professional skateboarder and addiction advocate Brandon Turner drops in with Justin to share his story of recovery.
Brandon spent years shoving down childhood trauma by living the lifestyle he thought a professional skateboarder needed to. It took jail time and a few court-mandated treatment programs for him to finally look inward and start the recovery process. Now he’s working to help people who are dealing with the same struggles he’s faced.
Brandon and Justin also chat about the societal pressure men face to be tough, setting boundaries with friends and family during recovery, and their mutual love of Brené Brown and skateboarding.

TW: eating disorders, disordered eating, and fatphobia
Anti-diet culture advocate Karly Watson drops in to talk about the ways diet culture impacts literally everyone. She shares her story of recovery from her eating disorder, and explains why—despite being very anti-diet culture—she doesn’t hate the people who perpetuate it.
Karly and Justin also talk about why we shouldn’t label foods as good or bad, signs you might need a new physician, and what parents can do to teach their children about healthy body images. Plus, a fun fact about the BMI scale and medicinal cocaine. Yeah, you read that right.

OCD is often used to describe people who organize their bookshelf alphabetically by author or like to clean. It reeeeeeaally shouldn’t be.
In this episode, Amanda Petrik-Gardner (aka @anxietyocdtreatment) drops in to talk about her and Justin’s shared experience of being diagnosed with OCD while studying to become therapists. The two also chat about the origin of Amanda’s OCD exposure colouring books, and discuss other unique coping mechanisms like singing about intrusive thoughts.

Masters level social worker and therapist Simone Saunders drops in to discuss the many complexities of trauma with Justin.
The word trauma is being thrown around a lot more these days, as we collectively experience a panorama. While paninis are objectively stressful, Simone explains that trauma is subjective. It’s how a person experiences a stressful event, and NOT the event itself.
The two also talk about the nuances of trigger warnings, how stimulating physical senses can affect how we feel emotions, and the importance of making therapy more accessible.

When is the last time you compared yourself to someone else? Like, maaaaybe five minutes ago? Whether it’s the highlight reel of social media, photoshopped magazine covers, or CGI-enhanced actors in superhero movies, we’re bombarded with messages of perfection.
Kristen Gingrich (aka @notyouraveragethrpst) drops in to chat about the problems of losing yourself in comparison. Mindful comparison can be helpful, but it can be emotionally exhausting to hold yourself to impossible standards.
Shifting her perspective from “what I don’t have” to “what I DO have” has helped Kristen deal with that negative voice in her mind (hers is named Frank BTW). While 16-year-old Kristen wished for a different figure, present-day Kristen appreciates those “child-bearing hips” for being just that! Well, at least when he’s behaving…

This mental health podcast starts like most superhero franchises: with an origin story. Justin shares what motivated him to become a psychologist, and how he had to be talked into trying TikTok… where he now has more than half-a-million followers. Jeez, hope he at least bought that friend dinner…
Because it’s a special episode, you get TWO origin stories for the price of one! Justin is joined by DiveThru founder Sophie Gray. Sophie shares how she struggled to cope with being bullied as a child, turning to self-harm and becoming a fitspo influencer. After a life-altering panic attack, Sophie turned to journaling to help her dive thru her feelings. Wait a sec, that’s the name of her company!
We’re so stoked to have you drop in (pun intended) on our first-ever episode!
