E12: Effective Communication

Listen Later

When there’s a breakdown in communication, a void gets created, and oftentimes negativity fills that void.

In this episode, we learn about the importance of communicating for the sake of connecting.

Introduction and Questions We Can Consider (3:10)

We learn about our guest and her passion for helping and supporting others. Season shares how she got into the field of human resources and how that experience narrow the trajectory her life has gone in.

HUA! (4:32)

Heard, Understood, and Acknowledged. These are things that every person wants to feel when we’re communicating with them. Leaders are not born, they’re created. Leadership is a skill that needs to be practiced in order to make progress.

Assume Positive Intent (8:01)

When we’re able to assume positive intent, we can very quickly begin to eliminate negativity and toxicity. One of the greatest mistakes that any of us can make is assuming all of our thoughts are true, so the only assumption we should be making is that of positive intent. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (10:46)

This is one of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, a fantastic book by Stephen Covey. There are 3 conversations that often occur for the one that’s actually happening… the one that you’re having, the one that I’m having, and the one that we’re having.

Fall In Love With Asking Questions (12:56)

Live a life of curiosity and we’re guaranteed to stay committed to being a lifelong learner. The more questions we can ask, the more understanding we have of the people we’re trying to connect with. Now we have the opportunity to best serve them since we have more information to go off of.

Furthermore, the types of questions that we ask are critical. We want to avoid ‘yes’ or ‘no’ responses, so we’re going to focus on open ended questions that warrant some dialogue.

LISTEN!!! (18:05)

There’s a difference between hearing someone and listening to someone. When we’re hearing someone, we’re simply waiting for them to stop talking so we can tell them what we want to say. When we’re listening, we’re receiving information, we’re processing information, and we’re utilizing information to best serve that person.

Implement the ‘No-Complaining Rule’ (18:44)

If there’s a problem, bring a solution to the table. Negativity slowly seeps in and creeps in when we allow complaining to continue.

Have a great day, everyone. Don’t forget to smile today. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. I’m Josh Parnell, reminding you to keep leading well.
