On this impactful episode, Julie Nee shares how to wipe away the fog and shine! Julie is a trainer, speaker, leader, author, and cancer survivor. She brings an energy and positivity to everyone she comes in contact with, and this interview was no different.
Introduction (1:22)
Julie shares her backstory, and a brief history of her role at the Hershey company, the impact that “The Energy Bus”, a book by Jon Gordon, had on her, and ultimately her career leap into working for Jon at The Jon Gordon Companies.
The Journey (3:40)
After leaving Hershey, Julie’s desire to get the message of “The Energy Bus” into the world started with a handful of free workshops and speaking events, and traction began to build over time.
Ultimately, Julie, Jon, and Julie’s teammate Amy P. Kelly, were able to co-create training programs and workshops around The Energy Bus, The Power of Positive Leadership, and The Power of Positive Teams to help build more positive teams and cultures.
The Leap (6:11)
Julie shares what it was like to take the leap from Hershey into the unknown. She shares the thoughts and feelings about the grind and the convenience of the direct deposits and security that comes along with it, but then all of a sudden it’s not there anymore.
She shares about the times she would often have imposter syndrome and then use her own teachings to feed herself with the positive to ultimately weed out the negative and overcome limited beliefs.
Mirror Mirror (12:25)
Julie shares the message of her book and the 5 reflections to clear the fog and help you shine. FOG stands for “forgetting our greatness”. The structure of her book is built around an acronym for the word “shine”.
S.H.I.N.E. (13:18)
Smile- The act of turning the corners of your mouth upwards releases serotonin and helps with things like depression. Smiles are contagious!
Harmonize- Dreams, words, and actions must be in alignment and harmony to make progress. If we’re all talk and no action, we’re not going to get there.
Impact- There’s a hug piece inside this section around self awareness and the major gap that many of us don’t realize exists. “What’s it like to be on the other side of me?”
Nourish- Before we nourish ourselves, we have to know ourselves to know what we need. Figure out what works for you, and do it. Practice gratitude!
Elevate- It’s about learning and growing. Then who and what are you surrounding yourself with?
Overcoming!!! (22:35)
In 2018, Julie’s life was rocked with a breast cancer diagnosis, and 2019 became a journey of overcoming. She shares about the work she and Jon were doing, and it was truly what kept her going. She endured over 30 rounds of chemotherapy, hair loss, a mastectomy, and multiple surgeries. Despite it all, Julie’s positivity never wavered, and her work became her purpose.
Have a great day, everyone. Don’t forget to smile today. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. I’m Josh Parnell, reminding you to keep leading well.
