Embracing Your Multi-Passionate Creative Self with D’Ana Joi Spencer

Listen Later

With the overwhelming majority of business leaders telling you to niche down, multi-passionate creative and entrepreneur D’Ana Joi Spencer offers an alternative view, where you can be creatively curious and see so much more possibility for yourself and your business.

Introduction (5:16)

Advice for people seeing being multi-passionate as a negative (11:40)
It starts with self-acceptance: your talents are a gift, not a burden. Don’t repress your passions. Your audience is perfectly capable of keeping up with you doing more than one thing, provided you present them with confidence.

What if you are feeling pressure to niche down? (14:53)
Relax into knowing that at some point you will organically arrive at your niche, but you don’t have to make one choice right from the beginning.

How to manage time as a multi-passionate (21:09)
I use Asana for day-to-day tasks. Having that structure actually gives me more freedom. I also operate under a 90-day season of focus, and audit the results at the end.

How to use social media as a tool and not a distraction (26:15)
We each need to take ownership over how much media we are consuming. There is a fine line between creating and consuming content. I schedule content out in advance, and then just delete the app. It forces me to think of other ways to connect.

How to nurture your artistry without being overwhelmed (32:45)
First thing I do is to unplug. Then I journal my 3 small victories at the end of every day. I focus on what I HAVE accomplished, in stead of what stayed undone. It helps with the overwhelm. Lastly, try a braindump organized by project, and then organize the project after that.

How to deal with imposter syndrome (38:36)
As a multi-passionate I often find myself thinking “How dare I try this.” To fight this, I evaluate the validity of my feelings and gather proof of the opposite – look at your testimonials, your compliments, etc. Ultimately, imposter syndrome will never leave you – so just wear it like a backpack and carry it up the mountain.

How to get out of a creative rut (43:55)
Sometimes instead of scheduling more things you feel you should be doing, you really just need to rest. Also change things up: rearrange your schedule, redecorate, switch up your energy, get moving physically.

What do you wish you knew when you started out (52:07)
I wish I was more confident with sales, and felt safe receiving money. I felt I had to just give everything away, especially as a woman of colour.
