Dawnie Adams is a remarkable individual with a diverse background in education and healthcare. Diagnosed with Type One Diabetes in 1993 at the age of 22, she has since become a passionate advocate for diabetes awareness and support. Currently working as a Midwife in a prominent teaching hospital, her expertise in Diabetes in Pregnancy has shaped her appreciation for multi-disciplinary collaboration and effective communication.
In her daily work, Dawnie provides compassionate midwifery care throughout the entire pregnancy journey, from conception to the postnatal period. Her vast knowledge and lived experience with diabetes have made her a sought-after speaker at education sessions for healthcare professionals, where she addresses various diabetes-related issues, including the use of technology, pregnancy, parenthood, ageing well, and tackling shame and stigma.
Having a background as a Primary School teacher for 13 years before transitioning into midwifery, she has a unique skill set in coordinating IT, PE, and English programs while writing policies and developing learning initiatives. Dawnie actively contributes to improving diabetes care across Northern Ireland as a #DeDoc° Voice, a Blue Circle Voice, and a lay member of both the Northern Ireland Diabetes Network Board and the Pregnancy Subgroup.
Her dedication extends to volunteering with Diabetes UK, where she actively works on creating support materials for women with diabetes navigating the challenges of menopause. As a member of Nsugbe Research Laboratories, Dawnie has presented her research work at global Midwifery, Diabetes, and Sensor Technology conferences, contributing to advancements in the field.
