Marie Nilsson fell 500m down a mountain in Poland. When the rescue team air lifted her limp, lifeless body to safety 4 hours post fall they informed her hiking partner that she would not survive the injuries sustained.

These injuries included severe traumatic brain injury, a shattered skull, 15 broken ribs, a fractured neck, shattered collarbone, fractured hip, broken left foot, loss of hearing in one ear, internal and external brain bleeds and as Marie emerged from a 5 week induced coma she tackled blood poisoning as her lungs, kidney and liver threatened to shut down.

This was four years ago.

Marie shares the terrifying moments, the pain and challenges, the emotional turmoil, the rehabilitation and the mindset that saw her pull through.

This year she started running again. It takes hours for her injured brain to fire up each morning but it doesn’t stop her mission. From physical rehab, meditation, learning guitar, reading and putting one foot in front of the other each and every day (both literally and metaphorically) to claim back her independence and her vivacious and precious life.
