Doctor Warrick Bishop - Heart Health

EP413: Younger Sharper Stronger

Listen Later

Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.

Dr. Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist and author, discusses how to age with strength by focusing on three key systems: the brain, bones, and muscles. He emphasizes that proactive care, starting as early as possible, is crucial for maintaining health and independence as we age. For brain health, he highlights the importance of vascular health, managing conditions like high blood pressure and insulin resistance, getting adequate sleep for waste removal, regular exercise, and a Mediterranean-style diet with antioxidants and omega-3s. Regarding bone health, Dr. Bishop stresses the need to check bone mineral density, as conditions like celiac disease or mastocytosis can impact it. He recommends load-bearing exercise, sufficient Vitamin D, K2, magnesium, protein, and collagen to strengthen bones.

Takeaways:

  • Heart disease is a significant issue in Australia, with a heart attack occurring every 20 minutes, many of which could be prevented with proper knowledge.
  • As we age, maintaining strength is crucial, focusing on three key systems: the brain, bones, and muscles.
  • Protecting cognitive function involves ensuring good blood flow to the brain, reducing inflammation, and maintaining metabolic health.
  • Vascular health is directly linked to brain health; managing conditions like high blood pressure and insulin resistance can prevent cognitive decline.
  • Studies suggest that lowering cholesterol, even with statins, may reduce the risk of all-cause dementia.
  • Adequate sleep is essential for brain health, allowing the brain to clear waste products and proteins.
  • Regular aerobic activity and strength training benefit long-term brain outcomes, alongside a Mediterranean-style diet and omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Bone health requires attention, and checking bone mineral density is recommended, especially if there are risk factors or a history of fractures.
  • Load-bearing exercise, adequate Vitamin D, K2, magnesium, protein, and collagen are vital for strengthening bones.
  • Muscle mass loss (sarcopenia) leads to frailty, but strength training can improve insulin sensitivity, posture, balance, and metabolic rate, even in older adults.
  • Finally, he addresses muscle health, explaining that sarcopenia, or muscle loss, leads to frailty and loss of independence. However, he assures that muscle strength can be improved even in older age through strength training, adequate protein intake, and supplements like creatine. This approach can enhance insulin sensitivity, posture, balance, and metabolic rate. Dr. Bishop encourages listeners to utilize his virtual heart and bone check resources and to share the podcast to help others live as well as possible for as long as possible.
