Coach John King - Longview High School (Tx)
John King graduated from Springhill High School (LA) in 1986 and was a state champion in football, power lifting and track. He attended Northwestern State University (LA) on a football scholarship and was a four year lettermen for the Demons in the offensive line. John was selected as the NSU Male Scholar Athlete in 1990 and has been selected to the Demon top 100 (2007) and the N Club (2012).
John King began his coaching career in 1992 at Many High School (LA) and also served as an assistant coach at Northwestern State University, Vidor HS, West Ouachita HS and Ouachita Parish HS. In 2000, King moved to Longview High School as Offensive Coordinator under Pat Collins and held that position for four years before being promoted to Head Coach in 2004. King’s twenty year record as head coach of the Lobos is 222-46 (112-9) with sixteen district titles and forty-five play-off victories. He has been selected district coach of the year sixteen times, Longview News Journal East Texas Coach of the Year in 2009 & 2018, Padilla Poll 6A Coach of the Year in 2017 & 2018 and TSWA 6A Coach of the Year in 2018.
In 2018, Coach King led the Longview Lobos to their first state title in 81 years as the team earned a perfect 16-0 record and the 6A- D-II State Championship. The Lobos were 4A State Finalists in 2008 and 2009, 5A State Semi-Finalists in 2010 and 2022 and 6A State Semi-Finalists in 2017. In addition to coaching the Lobos, Coach King has participated in the NETX FCA All Star Game in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2021 the U.S. Army All-American Game in 2018 and most recently was chosen to coach in the 2020 Under Armour All-American Game.
Coach King has served and promoted the Texas High School Coaches Association by serving as president of the association in 2021, THSCA Board of Directors for Region VI (2011-2014), nominee for THSCA President-Elect 2014, 2015, 2018, THSCA Football Advisory Committee (2016-2018) and the THSCA Athletic Director Advisory Committee (2018-2020). The THSCA serves over 25,000 coaches across the state of Texas. In addition to his service to the THSCA, he also serves as a charter member of the East Texas Coaches Association, serves as treasurer of the organization (2014-present) and was inducted into the ETCA Hall of Honor in 2019.
John and his wife Jodie, a teacher at Longview High School, have two children, Haynes, a Texas A&M graduate and current starting QB at Georgia Tech and Steelie who is an All-American gymnast and National Champion at Texas Woman’s University. The Kings are members of the Winterfield United Methodist Church in Longview, TX.
