Michael Smith is the Head Girls and Boys Basketball Coach and Athletic Director for Booneville High School in Booneville, MS. In 19 years as a head coach, his teams have won over 20 division championships, 2 North Half Championships, and have played for 13 state championships winning 8. He has won multiple coaching awards including 3x NFHS Coach of the Year for MS, one NFHS South Sectional Coach of the Year Award, MAC Coach of the Year, Clarion Ledger COY, and USA Today Coach of the Year for Mississippi. In 2022, Michael and another coach were the first coaches to win a state championship in both boys and girls basketball in the same year in the history of the state. In 2023, he was the first coach in MS, and according to the MHSAA, the first coach in U.S. History to win back to back state championships in both boys and girls basketball. Michael is a certified Mental Performance Coach. He has become sought out for coaching clinics and speaking engagements due to his experience and success.
Michael is a graduate of New Site High School (‘96), attended NEMCC, a Bachelor's degree from Ole Miss (‘00 in Social Studies Education), and a Masters degree from the University of Cincinnati (‘05) in Educational Leadership. He has been married to Shawna Smith for 21 years. The couple has seven children: Ava Kate, Rhett, Clarke, Grier, Bauer, Audra Rose, and Abbot.
