In this episode, Dr Jessica Hochman discusses common childhood milestones with her children's pediatrician, Dr Carlos Lerner. The goal of the talk to to help parents recognize what milestone delays may be considered normal and what may benefit from further medical evaluation.  They cover motor skills---when should parents expect their children to master the skills such as sitting, crawling and walking?   They also talk about speech milestones--when should parents expect to hear babbling? Or expect to hear first words? They also discuss behaviors in children---what is "normal" and what might prompt parents to seek an evaluation?  What are signs of autism? And what about sensory integration disorder--is this a new diagnosis?  This is a great discussion for parents who have young children!

Dr. Carlos Lerner is a very impressive pediatrician! Dr Carlos Lerner, MD, MPhil  practices pediatrics at UCLA and serves as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics and well as a Senior Quality Officer and Physician Informaticist for UCLA Health. He is the medical director of the Pediatric Medical Home program at UCLA, which provides comprehensive primary care for children with medical complexity. He is a two-time recipient of the Robert C. Neerhout faculty award for contributions to pediatric resident education. Dr. Lerner's research interests include health care delivery and health system redesign, with a focus on children with medical complexity, and the use of clinical informatics to advance population health.

He obtained his BA in Public Policy at Stanford University, and  received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and completed his pediatrics residency training in the Boston Combined Residency Program.   Dr. Lerner also obtained an MPhil in health economics from the University of York, England, as a Marshall Scholar. After residency, Dr. Lerner spent six years at the Kayenta Health Center, a remote Indian Health Service facility on the Navajo reservation.
