Today I interviewed Erika Malm, a therapist who specialises in treating trauma and eating disorders over 15 years. We discussed the complex factors that contribute to eating disorder development, the key role self-love plays in recovery, and the promising research into psychedelics for treating eating disorders.
Erika explained how psychedelics can be another avenue to help people access their true selves and heal from engrained patterns. But she cautioned these treatments must be approached cautiously, with a solid foundation of safety, support and weight restoration.
I related my own experience using psilocybin later in my recovery journey to help process childhood patterns. It was life-changing yet intense and required encouragement and patience as I integrated the lessons over time.
We both hope that options like guided psychedelic therapy become legally accessible in the future to transform more lives stuck in eating disorders. There's always reason to hold hope. No one is a hopeless case, just mired in a maladaptive coping strategy that served you once until it didn’t. As more treatment innovations emerge, we can create space for people to heal.
